Freelance Web Developer

If you are looking for a decent web developer in the UK then you are probably looking at £250-£300+ a day. If they are good then they know they can command a decent day rate.

If you are looking to employ full-time then you are probably looking at around £40k-£50k. There are smart young devs out there who will be cheaper but someone with a proven track record will cost more.

It really depends on what you need. It might be easier to do it on a project basis.

I work mainly in London so companies tend to pay through the nose a bit.

I have an excellent guy in Stoke-on-Trent who I would recommend. DM me if you would like an intro.

Firstly there is development and there is development!
Anyone will call themselves a developer and there are a variety and depending on the language too you will find a big disparity.

If you want to keep things in the value range then avoid custom development. Custom development is very expensive and you will continually need to update it too!

It is a great tip to find an existing plugin (within a framework such as wordpress or joomla) that offers what your function needs and then tune that to your needs.

In honesty almost all scenarios are covered more or less. If you have such a unique need then fine but it will cost you from 50 pounds per hour. If you find a developer for less then you might get lucky but good ones dont work for less because they find work for this everywhere! Good devs have day rates from 300 pounds...

Also you have front end developers and backend developers the difference is usually languages but also there are techniques too.

So if you are thinking lets go for a wordpress or joomla website and get someone who can customise the design then I know good ones.

If you are looking to do coach hire comparison site then check for plugins- but that may well be a custom job.

Custom development is generally more expensive but there is a reason for that. However, he can find a company abroad and keep costs reasonable. Our company is such and i think our rates are not high. I'm pretty sure even within UK there are good devs who will do custom work for a reasonable fee.

Regarding the continuous updates, i think it's the exact opposite. Outside of adding new functionality, you don't ever have to update a custom site. But you have to update generic CMS all the time, which can lead to various types of problems.

In any case, it's best to deal with a company if the project is large, as they offer more security for the buyer. For smaller projects, single developers are fine.

Expect to pay £50 per hour for a seasoned front end web developer with design skills. These days you can't call yourself a web designer if you don't have front end development skills. So HTML5, CSS3, JS and knowledge of back-end stuff like PHP would be desirable.

I run a small web design business in London and work on a per project basis, and if it's long term work, we usually negotiate a retainer with the client.
