Freelance Telemarketing - How to get started?

Hi All,

After a difficult few months I am looking to get set up as a freelance telemarketer.

I have relevant experience both working within the customer service / telesales industry and the running my own company.

The question I have, how would I go about advertising my service and generating new business?

Luckily, for the moment I have one or two contacts which I can provide lead generation to via cold calling, this isn't ideal as the market is saturated.

I have been thinking about developing a web presence, but is that route really beneficial? The competition is massive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially from the Telesales experts on here, you know who you are ;)

I was going to go for a slightly more sarcastic reply, but its Saturday so thought I'd have a day off. :)

At the end of the day, you have one very obvious means of trying to drum up some work as mentioned above. To help you beat the competition you should be looking at developing a marketing plan. It is best not to jump straight in to trying to promote your services until you have got some marketing planning done. Ideally you should do some research into niche markets and ways to engineer yourself a competitive advantage within these areas.

However, if you need to get earning ASAP, pick up the phone and get cracking, then work on a plan as you go along.

Interesting.

I have a couple of pay per lead contracts at present, nothing major £20-40 a lead, usually generate 1-2 leads an hour whilst maintaining a good conversion rate.

Just looking for something more sustainable I guess.

Mr P,

I'm going to strangle you if you don't get in touch with me soon (LOL) we have been trying to do some business with each other for ages and haven't gotten anywhere (I know we are both busy trying to earn a crust!!)

Drop me a line and I can put to you another project outside of insulation and solar panels you may be interested in (its b2b so there is some flexibility in it)

Speak soon

Bluelight :)

Some guy rang me up with an enquiry for telesales the other week. He reckoned It was possible to sell 50 subscriptions per month to his new directory website for £150 each in month 1!!. I asked him how many he had sold already to which I received the reply 'er none'.

9 out of 10 leads that come in are people who want to use you as an unpaid guinea pig for an unproven product. The trick of being successful in Telemarketing is to find the elusive 1 in every 10!

Most people use freelance cold callers however all the individuals I know are only getting paid per qualified lead.

Half of the posters on UKBF should by definition be telemarketers and yet they are not...they are t'nterneters and tweeters and so forth.

Never worry about competition and do not even think of a website for what you plan.Invest in a very good phone, some good training and pick up the phone and make a business for yourself.

Working by yourself in sales will always be about 150% tougher than teaming up with others. You need to think about this as a ton of people EVERY week go into sales-particularly over the phone and a ton come out every week or are fired-and more should be.

Excuse the bluntness but there is no fairytale ending. Sales is tough and the rewards are there for those that can hack it.Most cannot.

Get properly trained and get going...and as for getting clients..if you cannot cold call and create an interest in your services then this idea is a bit of a non starter surely ?
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies to date, I'm going to hit the phones tomorrow to drum up some new business for myself :)

I'm making a decent amount of money at the moment, it's just the sustainability of the product isn't great and it wouldn't hurt to try and gain experience in different sectors.

Go commission only with residual payments for so long as your client holds the contract. MUCH, MUCH more risk but correspondingly higher returns if you get it right.

However,

1st Make sure it is a saleable product or service, don't be afraid to find out how many they have already sold. Sadly that seems to eliminate about 90% of these type of enquiries.

2nd Make sure you have a contract ensuring that you get paid

3rd Take a setup fee, this shows good faith from the customer, if they balk at paying you this then in all likelihood they will balk at paying your commision.

Hope this helps.

Hi Kickstart,

Can I ask why you want me to PM you please?

Apologies - badly phrased post;I was suggesting that the OP PM me.

Stretchy, you are 100% correct that my eyes lit up at the idea of commission only telesales.

You couldn't be more wrong, however, about the unproven product. The core product is entrenched in business, our particular angle is relatively new but well understood and has received considerable positive coverage in the quality media.

My aim is simply to get the most out of what will be a significant growth curve.

I have no problem with anyone who listens to a proposition & declines it - but can't really see much point in trying to guess the proposition in order to decline it.
