wordpress is not just for blogs - although it is very good for blogs.
Joomla, Modx, Drupal are all good 'free' solutions if you are a designer and can build your own theme. But I suspect your not, otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question.
Wordpress is therefore probably your best bet as it has tons of free, ready to use themes - although if you want a custom theme you will either have to learn some php/css/html or pay someone to do it.
You will also need to think about hosting if you want your own domain name.

I was mostly disagreeing with your statement that Wordpress is mainly for blogs. Didn't it win last years Best Open Source CMS Award because it is widely used as a platform to build websites with? It is used extensively for website builds.
Joomla may well be more versatile. The OP asked about systems that are 'easily customizable', and I think Wordpress, both to build and to maintain, is more accessible (customizable) than Joomla.

In my opinion Joomla is fantastic; however it is more for designers and web developers. But for a beginner, Wordpress is one of the easiest systems to use. If you are looking for a web host, I am very happy with evohosting. Unlike other hosts I have used, the Evo support team know what they are talking about! Which is a great help if you are a beginner, good luck with your site.

I really like the analogy place of design, I'm inclined to agree with you. However I think you can express an opinion based on ease of customisation. I'd speculate the original asker probably wants to "give it a try" and therefore is in pursuit of an easy to use system. In my opinion if you have the inclination, the time and necessary skills to build upon, a SME could deploy their own basic website to describe services they offer etc etc. This can be a temporary solution until they have the available funds to consult a web professional.

Wow! Thank you for all of your responses, it's really useful to get all of your opinions.
The reason why I need a free website is because I'm currently designing a website of my own, but as I'm just getting to grips with programming and through lack of funds, it's taking rather a long time to make.
The skills that I'm learning are also very good for the industry I want to get more involved in, designing and managing Facebook accounts for businesses and eventually getting more involved with email marketing. So the programming skills that I'm learning are very useful. However, I have set up links with professional designers and developers to help me if I get a little bit stuck.
I would just like a temporary website that just starts things off a little until my site is designed and set up. Hence I want it for free.
