We currently use bespoke software which is now free but did cost alot to get developed however I can certainly tell you some of the software not to use...
SEnuke and SEnukeX - Black hat
xScraper - Black hat
A couple would include marketing samurai (free trial) for keyword research along with the Google adwords keyword tool.

Adwords keyword tool for keyword research
Google for competition research.
Type the following into Google to get an exact number of websites that are optimised for your keyphrase.
inanchor:"KEYPHRASE" inurl:"KEYPHRASE" intitle:"KEYPHRASE"
Make sure you put your keyphrase in quotes like above. This will display all the websites that have your keyphrase in their title, url and anchor text. If this number is quite high i would normally try something else or go for a longer tail keyphrase.
Heres an example someone is free to use:
If you type new balance 860 (a type of trainer) into google it lists 3 million results. Now check to see how many sites are actually optimised for this:
inanchor:"new balance 860" inurl:"new balance 860" intitle:"new balance 860"
Total is THREE!!
Build a site to sell these, make sure your url, anchor and title have these in and by default you will climb to the first page of google.
By the way that gets over 500 EXACT searches a month
If the number was higher than 3 lets say 100, I would then use Majestic Seo to check out the 1st and 10th placed competition. See how many inbound links they have. Create inbound links with that anchor to more than 10th place and you will again by default by on page one.
Now let me add a disclaimer to my above method.
Domain age, Authority of the linking sites and your sites content do hold weight with Google so the above method wont work 100% of the time.
However I have got it to work many many times.
Using the above method and doing proper keyword research is key. It is above and beyond any blackhat method available.
Tools used correctly can help a lot but being smart in the beginning in way more important.

I use seo powersuite bundle and recommend it to other folks. But, perhaps, it's not a universal answer to any optimizer's needs.
What it does is it researches keywords, tracks rankings, does on-page and backlink analysis. you can give it a try for free, if you wish.
