Free IP location software

Hi,

Looking for a free piece of basic software that allows me to locate the geographical 'where abouts' of a customer based on their IP address....not looking for a free 15 day trial and then you have to pay.... a totally free piece of software. Any suggestions ?

The most accurate you're going to get is Country-based. And even then, it can be a bit hairy.

Don't expect to get accurate results for Cities, etc.

I am also looking for a geo location script or applet to integrate into a web site, essentially I need it to look at the ip address of the visitor and then plug in custom phrases into the page. For example if their ip address is local to us we can offer a discounted printer repair service as our engineers would have less far to travel. I have come across these java based scripts before but the subscription to the service is quite expensive, anyone know of a decent low cost service? I believe that a small subscription would be worth paying if the results were accurate.

You can view your current IP using IP CHECKER software.
The simple and very much used method for viewing the IP is using the following sites
cmyip.com,myipaddress.com etc

Just some feedback.....have been using http://www.whatsmyip.org/iplocation/ the past few days for checking orders. On the whole its been OK in terms of the locations, probably 80% of the time, the place the customer lives in and wants the goods delivered to, is in sync with what whatsmyip.org is saying where they are from. However, one order for tonight for example from Scotland is saying they are in Leeds based on their IP address, all the other checks we do say this customer checks out as legit . On the whole, as one of many checks to ensure against fraid it helps.

In terms of accurancy, if someone is using a portable device to purchase, say like an iphone or a laptop in a hotel, I guess the IP address will show that location rather than their home location....right ?

No. The IP address location is only based on the ISP's details they provide.
