Do you never give to charity ? because that is what I am proposing. Believe me I am not rich or successful but if you can give back and make a difference - why not ?

Si

Only the RNLI and i would sooner (which i have done by the way) look around locally for someone or people who need help and bung them a few hundred to help them along ..

But never give to other countries .. all you do is pay for them to get to the UK etc..

Old saying Charity begins at home and its all to big a scam now.. from £100 given only £2 gets to where they say ..

Would you be able to give a source for the statistic you quoted 'out of out of every £100 donated only £2' or 2% goes to the beneficiary? It's not a figure I have ever come across.

Charity whether given at home or abroad helps millions all over the world rebuild their lives, become healthier, gain an education, have a safe place to live, prevents abuse and violence, provides opportunities people would otherwise not be able to experience and equips people with the skills they need to help support themselves, their families and communities.

Minimising poverty, improving health and education and improving the environment helps us all have a more stable and thriving world, wherever we live.

Yes unfortunately there can be corruption and mismanagement both at home and abroad. Some charities and governments in the past have not been as responsible as they could have been in terms of how money has been spent, but this is much less the case nowadays and is not a reason not to give. Just check the transparency of the cause you want to support and you can easily find online and in their annual reports (legal requirement through the Charity Commission) how much in the £1 goes directly to support a project or service.

Over the year's I have sponsored children abroad, worked with children with disabilities and mentored young people in the UK, worked for Crisis at Christmas, donated to Greenpeace and Amnesty and provided pro bono support for over twenty not for profits. Everyone of these experiences has been enormously rewarding and has given me as much as I have given.

So thank you to all those on here who support a cause through sharing skills, volunteering and donating.

One of my ex Girlfriends was Area Manager for a well know leading Charity in clothing .. with all the management fees (which are well over even Bank Jobs in some case !!) the advertising ,the rents etc.the figure was a pitiful
2% passed to the supposed good cause ..

If you want to help , go and spend time with an old age pensioner , talk to her or him .make sure there ok buy there shopping or something , help them NOT some far of Country which NO matter how hungry they seem to be , they just can`t stop breeding can they ???

I remember back in the 60`s foreign kids starving on TV over there , and they still breed like rabbits , so obviously they aint that suffering are they, not to hungry for making more :D > its all for the cameras ;)

What happened to geldoff and band aids millions ?

As I mentioned before not for profits and governments have tightened up procedures around what happens to money donated to save lives in the UK and abroad since the Live Aid concerts over 30 years ago.

For a sense of balance I have attached two recent pieces around Sir Bob Geldoff and what has happened with the Band Aid millions.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/mar/05/bob-geldof-live-aid - about the Radio 4 report that Band Aid was one of a number of organisations whose money went to rebels and arms rather than feeding the starving.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/sir-bob-geldof-returns-to-ethiopia-838131 a report on a recent visit to see what has happened to some of the millions donated to people starving in Ethiopia.

And for those two young to remember Live Aid

And if I recall, Geldof himself was close to bankruptcy before live aid and is now worth an estimated £70m !.....
