Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has a free template for Microsoft Excel to keep accounts with? Ive found a few online myself, but look too complex or poorly designed. Either a link or can PM me.

I know its not ideal way to do book keeping but given the size of my business (small online shop) I cant really justify spending £100+ on proper software like Sage or Quickbooks at the moment!

Many Thanks.

As Dave has suggested VT cashbook is great and free.:)

Just to add though you dont have to spend £100+ on Sage/Quickbooks to get really good software. In addition to VT you may also be interest in looking at these packages -

Here's the advice I give to everyone in your situation:

There are a number of basic bookeeping applications out there that are free.

A spreadsheet is fine for listing money in and money out, but go beyond that and things can start to get a bit complicated.

Even a simple bookkeeping program helps you keep on top of your cashflow, makes reconciling your bank account easier and over time can give you a really good insight into your business. For example, just being able to easily classify your costs can soon reveal useful things you didn't know.

Investing in a more sophisticated program gives you even more tools to help you with the money side of your business - and can reveal bits of information that can help you grow your business. Of course, working for a software company, you'd expect me to say that. So don't take my word for it, give one of the freebies a go... you might be pleasantly surprised!
Obviously, I'd hope that you choose my product (more than 25,000 downloads to date), but please... choose anything rather than using Excel!

i prepare hedge fund accounts using excel. They are complicated as hell but its the best and only way to produce them.

To use excel as a place to do bookkeeping is very messy though. You need to upload it into some sort of package which creates the database from which you can extract the data

VT is truly superb in my opinion. I've got experience with sage, quickbooks and a few others and this beats all of them hands down for simplicity

We use the VT Final accounts for all our accounts production and I have no hesitation in recommending the bookkeeping package (VT Transaction +) to any of my cleints that ask about software

And it's also great value for money - about £100 per year

Warmly
