free domains

not that i am a fan of alternative domain name extensions i would take a quick look at http://www.dot.tk

They are giving them away for free!!

because it is a new(ish) domain extension you can pick up some quite good catagory domain names.

eg: www.ukplumbers.tk or www.onlineaccountant.tk (dont know if these are free - i was just giving examples)

they can prove to be quite valuable marketing tools if used in the right way.

(i think the limit is three per person)

they are holding back really good category names but because it is run from the US I stumbled on quite a few that are available because of slight differences in language between UK and US.

for example: differences in spelling - color (US) and colour (UK) or center (US) or centre (UK).

(you have to already have web address to forward it to for free ones - they dont come with hosting)

claire,

yes unfortunately in order to get a free one you need an existing website.

the free domain simply points to your own site - there is no hosting space included.

if you are looking for some personal webspace as opposed to commercial i can provide you with a sub domain and 100 meg of hosting space FREE as a member of this forum.

you can then get your free domain name and point it to this sub domain.

if you would like this then pm me and i can have it set up within an hour with full ftp access.

Tilting off topic a bit....

I wondered what .tk meant...but soon found out!! I thought it was a leg pull at first, till I discovered one of the islands is called Fakaofo....then I distinctly warmed to it!!

"The atoll of Fakaofo totals 50 square km. Some 400 people live on the tiny four-and-a-half-hectare Fale Island, which is well shaded by breadfruit trees. In 1960, a second village was established on the larger island of Fenuafala, about three km northwest, to relieve the overcrowding. At low tide you can walk across the reef between the two." :D

I wish they did domain names that ended .fakaofo!

 Sorry - I should be more serious. I'll get me coat.
