Sorry, you are not right, I brought 4 my websites to top10- 20 only with directories.
Moreover, this is a good tactics to use directories to bring website in top 20 ( one of the most cheapest way) and only after that you can do something more seriouse with your website

Should have qualified my answer better.

The only benefit I have managed to get from directory listings in the last two years is moving from PR0 to PR1 on one of my sites. Not exactly setting the SEO world alight.

I think it depends on the directory in question. There are a serious number of crap ones out there which give no benefit. But if you can get linked on a few good ones it is definitely worth it.

Not enough people do this, they seem to think just filling in an online form is
all there is to it, not enough realise that on some directories there is someone
