Hi all.

Would anyone be able to recommend any Mac compatible free simple software (for micro business - self & wife & mother T/O £80000 inc.). Wouldn't need stock, wages etc. just end of month purchase & bought ledger to be able to present to the accountant at the year end. We have always been paper based but mum is looking to bow out and now's the time to be dragged kicking & screaming into the 21st Century! Don't really know where to start other than Google searches so any tips/recommendations are most welcome. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend Easy Books from Geode software.

Although it is not free, there is a free demo which you can try.

It's very simple and straightforward. I have been using this for my own business accounting for the last 8 months and my books have never been in better shape.

Is it essential that it's free?

With a £80k turnover I think you may find a small investment in an online package such as Accounts Portal will be money well spent. I dont work for or have any connection with Accounts Portal by the way just a very happy user with many happy clients who use it.:)

A spreadsheet isn't an accounting system. IMO you need something that does vat accounting, accounts, Tax projections etc. A spread sheet needs coding for this and then changing when the rates change.

Have you asked what your accountant uses as sometimes you can 'negotiate' on the fees by agreeing an system between you.

We have a free system but it is for clients.

Just to know the views of accountants in general about cloud computing:

    a) Reliability - Xero looks better given they're a company listed on a stock exchange; but how reliable are others like Accounts Portal, Accountants Circle etc etc??

    b) Confidentiality - Are we violating the engagement terms (client confidentiality) by putting the client details on the cloud?

    c) Security - what happens if technology fails us (I understand the data are stored in the US). Some of these companies don't even have a phone number!

    d) Data protection - ICO compliant??

    Appreciate views

    e) What happens if we have a problem with the the service provider, particularly given that the terms are monthly payment per client? Data lost? How could then we keep the data for 6 or 7 years??

    Hi FrankZapper,

We have an online accounting software for bookkeeping that is compatible with any operating systems, be it Mac or Microsoft. It's called 'Simple Online Accounting'. As long as you can access internet, you can use this software through your browser. Have it a go with a 30 day free trial :)

Do you have the source for these views - I would like to see how many were asked in the accountancy profession thank you

Did you try out any of the free accounting systems for Mac that appeared in your Google searches? I'm not personally familiar with any of these, but if they can handle what you're asking for, then at least that's a good place to start.

If you decide to move on to a subscription-based solution at some point, I just want to mention that E-conomic works perfectly fine on Mac as well as pc. I actually think you'll find that most online solutions support both.

You might want to take a look at Wave Accounting which is 100% free. Their business model is based on income from adverts, rather than charging a fee to users. The adverts are hardly noticeable if I'm honest and not at all intrusive.

I have no connection with Wave but simply recommend this online cloud application because it performs well and does what you need it to do.

The great advantage of cloud based bookkeeping applications is that your accountant can be given access to your records and can "hold your hand" along the way to make sure that what you are doing is correct. Also at the end of the financial year your accountant has easy access to your bookkeeping records.
