I want to know if there's any way to get traffic to my site for free? I don't want to spend hundreds on advertising until I have a few clients (as I only set my site up the other day).

Is there any ideas?

Social networking sites
- add people, never spam

Classifieds
-Bing or Google search for them, there are loads

Offline advertising
-door to door leaflet posting
-place advertisement in newspapers
-business cards

I have some Business Cards coming my way, and leaflets. My sister works at a printing company, and she has got me like 500 business cards, and a few hundred leaflets. Which hopefully should bring in some business

The Social Networking one seems good. I have Facebook, so could easily do it on there. Sounds trupid, but I wouldn't know what to say?

The first thing you need to do is get you web site exposure. You can do that in 2 ways as a free member without infringing the rules.

1) Go back to your 'Profile' and include your home page. 2) Include your web site in your signiture nbut without the www which would create a link.

I should say that you are entering a highly competitive world as far as Networking is concerned but there are opportunities out there because many designers in my opinion anyway are quite lazy who sit by their computers all day and expect customers to knock on their door.

Sorry guys but it is true isn't it..

How many of you get out there booted & suited and knock on doors. Very few I think and yet that is where the opportunities lay.

I got one of my jobs (where I got £20 to myself - not alot, but a start!) by asking my neighbour's son if they wanted a website created. And they wanted a Forum done, so I couldn't resist!

It's only a hobby but I got a cheque for $10 USD framed and hanging on the wall from the New York Police department after I wrote an article in their bi-annual journal warning of the dangers of fireing a warning shot into the air many years ago.

It's not always the money. Every law enforcement agency in the world changed it's policy on challenging villians after that piece - including out own ARU teams.

Anyway get out there and your do OK.

Just seen that you have updated your details on another thread. You might want to check the links on your portfolio - they don't work and frankly I think that you need a better web site that the presnt to attract business.

It really does look ver amateurish.

Networking events, leaflets in doors, telesales, mailshots and emails.

I must agree. Your logo is fuzzy and in your FAQ your claim that £40 to update a website is extortionate. Why do you think this? A plumbers minimum callout fee is £80 so why shouldn't a web design company charge a minimum charge of £40? Most web design companies also offer an ongoing support fee as a more cost effective alternative anyway.

The most worrying aspect of your website is your lack of credibility. No address. No company number. Even if you're positioning yourself at the bottom of the market you still need these basics or no-one is likely to use you in an already saturated market.

You've got to ask yourself why some web design companies can charge £60 or £70 per hour and why some clients would only use those developers for their projects.
