Hi guys,

I'm currently in my final year, studying Advertising & Marketing Communications at Bournemouth University.

My course is pretty theory-based and vocational, but I am looking to improve my Photoshop skills.

If anyone would like to send me a brief of any adverts/logos etc, I will be happy to take the time to use Photoshop to work on it...free of charge! It would look good for my portfolio after university, and if you like what I do...u can use it...if you don't, you haven't lost anything.

Cheers,
Ryan

Great offer and good luck building your portfolio. A small point you might want to consider is that logos are designed in vector drawing programs (after being hand drawn first) so that they can be resized without loss of quality. Photoshop can do this but only to a very limited extent. Use a vector tool and if you come up with some killer logos for people they won't need to fork out a load of money having the designs converted to vector formats.

All the best.

I have seen a blog post somewhere (can't recall exactly where now) about new designers coming onto the marketplace "thinking" that they have to offer design services for free. Business experience and knowledge may not be there at this particular point in time which allows other businesses to potentially take advantage.

Ryan, all the best in your venture. Bear in mind that your design skills and time can be charged for however little that amount may be. Developing your business skills in parallel with design/portfolio is just as important to make a success of it.

Thanks

I agree. You don't need to work for free, I'm sure anyone interested would be happy to pay an even nominal sum (£10- £15 for a logo for example).

Best of luck!

p.s. a question for the design pros out there, would an eps file created in Illustrator class as a vector file?

I gave that advice for a fledgling designer. He charged just £15-£50 per logo to build his portfolio which was NOTHING to businesses even start ups. He compared that to his fellow graduates who offered the FREE route.

The outcome? - the one charged the minimal fee for design achieved the best results by far!! Gained higher respect. Better portfolio etc.

Shame - I wanted to hire him when he graduated but he was grabbed by a London design agency.
