Hi Everyone,

I'd like to get some help regarding franchises...Although I'm not lost running a business i don't have experience in starting one.
Especially when it comes to a franchise. i would really appreciate some step by step help even if it's a suggestion to a website where i could get the neccessary information...

Thank you very much

What franchise are you interested in? If you can wait until February next year, there is this.........
http://www.thefranchiseshow.co.uk/

Or go to WHSmith or similar. There are a couple of magazines available on the subject.

So do your homework, and do what you are doing now.Ask questions. And if you find a franchise you like the sound of,go and visit it,and see what is going on.Don't necessarily believe the people selling their franchise.

Good luck with it.

PS I've never understood people getting into franchises.Seems to me to be quite a risky proposition. So please be very careful.

If you've already chosen the franchise I'm not quite sure what info you're asking for. There's a website here http://www.franchiseinfo.co.uk/ and a big franchising show at the NEC at the end of September where there will be plenty of advice available.

Any decent franchise should give you the step-by-step help you need anyway, after all that's partly/mostly what you're paying for.

Hi GIGI. I've made a living over the last 20 years or so advising some of the countries most successful franchising entrepreneurs. If you haven't already taken the plunge by all means contact me and I'll be happy to share my experience with you.

There are some good franchises out there but others are absolute dross so think carefully about what you're franchisee fee and monthly payments are actually getting you. Is it a brand name like Macdonalds, expertise specific to the sector, buying leverage etc. Or is the franchisee just selling them in order to make a quick buck.

Before entering into any agreement make sure you know what it is you're paying a premium for and ask yourself why you're going down this route rather than starting up yourself and building your own brand rather than somebody elses.

We do franchise software so I have an idea of how the successful people work.

I really would recommend you talk to a reputable franchise consultant, affiliated to the BFA (you can find the list on their website). The big names I know of are FDS or The Franchising Centre (used to be Howarths) but there are lots of good smaller people.

These guys will eventually charge but they help guys like you succeed since although the idea is simple the details (legal and otherwise) of good franchising are not. They know the pitfalls and they know what works. In my view, they are well worth the money.
