Footer seo

The mass of place names there? Useless.

The links at the top of the footer though, using keywords, are a common technique, and could produce better search engine rankings.

Ultimately though, it does look very messy.

I see a lot of websites do this but to me it looks spammy and will have little effect, the best idea is to create a page for each area e.g. webdesign-selly.html, webdesign-derby.co.uk etc, then link to them in local directories

I agree that adding specific pages is the best way forward - recognise that conversion is also an issue, so spamming a post to get local traffic wont help much either.

For that reason create the "local posts" around reference sites.

Write a few paras about what you did at the site, eg "house wiring edgbaston" anything unusual , pictures if you have them, comment from the customer. Make it natural. - eg a post for a birmingham electrician that contains stuff about wiring up shower pumps or boilers, with words of advice for those considering it, willl help to get you the long tail traffic for those terms.

the posts can be linked through from the footer (or sidebar) using the right anchor text... eg "edgbaston electrician"

wordpress is a dream for a non tech business person to create such a many paged site - takes about 10 mins precisely to get running if you use the right host that has fantastico

If your trying to rank for non competitive terms like sparky "local area" then your towns at the bottom and your postcodes will work wonders just make sure they are well below the text, no one is not going to call you because of it (if they see it all) and it may get you ranked, also have a look at the browse areas (drop down menu) on my homepage, thats a tip i got off a member, it conceals all the areas nicely and gets picked up by google. plumber newcastle bit of a blatant link ;)

Its not spamming and dependant on the type of service or product being offered can make a huge difference to a company operating in a restricted area.

I think we need a debate to teach people the difference between spam, and a good steak so few people seem to understand the difference.:D

I wonder whether some search engines might not construe the placement of all those areas unlinked to pages on the base of your front page as being blackhat... just thinking keyword stuffing? I'm sure theres plenty of people on here who would know better than I though and I'd be interested to hear their thoughts?
