Anyone out there haveing success with flyers? been doing a few for roofing and fencing work. But theres nothing seem to be happening.
Maybe Feb is simply a bad month for enquiries.

Flyers can be odd, I dropped about 150 in one area just to see how long it would take me to get round a few houses and ended up with £419.76 of business (2 customers)

My tail was up so I then decided to get 5k made up and distribute them in an area that I had researched over 3 days with the help of 2 of my friends -

So far I have gained 1 customer from that exercise worth 179.88 which left me about £100.00 down when you take the printing etc into consideration.

However, I don't think it's just as easy as that to make up figures, as was said above it may be several weeks before anyone gives you a call.

I'm planning on having a large quantity printed up and hitting the same area regularly rather than hitting it once and moving on to the next.

Simple answer. If leaflets aren't working for you, you're doing it wrong. Either the design of the leaflets is poor, or the way they are being delivered is wrong. Best advice is don't let a graphic designer design your leaflets and research effective design yourself.

It is certainly not a case of it being a poor time to pick up work.

Hi, Craig - do you include your business address, website details, etc on your leaflet? Do you also advertise in the local papers??

Maybe you're suffering the backlash of the recent flurry of tv programmes about problems with work done after leaflet drops.

I was thinking about this the other day when there was a leaflet pushed through my door at home; when times are slow, you've really got to try much harder to get business - but it's probably harder than ever to gain the trust of the local community after the negative tv programmes.

Good luck with your business venture :)

Hiya, we are roofers too, we put out fliers this time last year and got a couple of jobs and then 6 months later got a couple more from the same batch of fliers. I think it's a quiet time of year, but I also think if people want us they look for us rather than us going to them??

That is exactly why it is important for businesses like yours to concentrate on marketing rather than trying to rely on advertising.

Flyers have to be done 100% correctly or they will fail miserably.

You've got to think in the mindset of the customer. Most people grab their post and they will tend to sort it before opening them. They will recognize bills and stuff that looks like it will be important and open them first...

Flyers on the other hand are generally looked at last and that's if they even get looked at. Most just get grabbed in a pile and thrown for the rubbish.

Don't go buying the traditional size flyers, get a custom design that stands out, have a GREAT offer -- not just the typical "Hey, check us out."

Make that offer time sensitive. Otherwise they will leave it until tomorrow and then the next tomorrow, OH and the tomorrow after that ha-ha.

Give them plenty of reasons WHY they should use your service. For example; can help improve the value of your house.

Remember this when writing marketing material:

Here's what i got --> Here's what it will do for you --> Here's how to get it.

Like I said, flyers have to be done correctly otherwise there's no point. Don't go thinking you need glossy paper, top-of-the-line design either. Sometimes just plain black and white can work much better.

Great post. There is an awful lot of rubbish spoken about advert design, usually by graphic designers. This post just about sums up the bare bones of a decent flyer.

Some really good points, as a designer myself I totally agree, but the problem is that most people want design that is commercial crap! I enjoy doing flyers and graphics that are different and quirky but no-one ever wants them, and alot of clients arent willing to take your advice.

I do agree with whats said above though
