Fiverr.com link provider warning

Hi guys,
Just a quick warning for everyone who has a client impressed by back linking services on fiverr. com.
A recent client of mine left claiming that a simple $5 linking service had got him to page one for his chosen key word within a few days :(:|
Obviously i was impressed - shocked and embarrassed that i had been out smarted by someone else - till i took a look myself.
Not on page one - so i asked him to show me a copy of the report and they were all spammy links that even an Indian SEO would shy away from (kidding)
But amazingly enough when reviewing his keywords they all were top of page one. this freaked me out because :-

1) Before I looked at the report they were not
2) Google customisation was disabled

But then i went across to my business partners computer and showed him - and woah and behold - he wasn't there.
Again I checked customisation wasn't enabled on my PC - so i sent him the report and BAM - his showed the same position one result.
Theory: the report had a hidden script which when opened altered the index.
So I cleared my cache and cookies and my listings then showed the true positions.
I called my "EX" client and instructed him to do the same. I have refused to take him back because there may be an adverse effect of his meddling in my work - some people just dont have the patience for SEO

If your clients come across this please feel free to enlighten them.
£3-£4 - for 10,000,000 backlinks is stupid - cheap yeah - but can ruin your online presence.

If you're paying someone $5 to link build, you're helping fuel a spam industry. Please don't do it. These people will either scam you as described above, or use automates tools that waste honest web masters time. It might be tempting to just try it for $5, but at the other end is some guy trying to run a website who has to spend time cleaning up the junk you've paid someone to leave all over his site.

Just because it's $5, doesn't mean it's spammy, underhanded, or responsible for the ultimate decay and crumble of society as we know it.

I've been more than pleased with some of the PR4 and PR5 review posts which I've purchased there, as well as a few other things.

If you're buying xrumer forum profile blasts, scrapebox comment blasts, or other bulk spam offers, then it doesn't matter whether it's $5 or $500.

Just as "Guns don't kill, people do", so too the $5 offers on fiverr are only as good as the people buying them.

So true, lets face it, if cost was any evidence of real value we would have the best Bankers in the world :)

I would like to confirm - that since I posted this on here my "EX" client has since lost all position and is floating around page 10.
As expected He called and wanted me to do some work to restore his positions and standing. I had a nice chat with him and showed some Snippets of an email from a Mr X (used to head up search at a famous German car firm) and explained that if his website was a new site that just require a simple wave of an SEO wand the initial price would be fine.
However (paused for effect and to think of a simple analogy that would explain it), have you ever gone to a restaurant and has a really bad meal. Would you ever go back there again? (he thought i meant him - but i meant his website).
The problem is that you have now highlighted your website as one that uses techniques Google frowns upon - and most importantly - you have lost Googles trust.
99% of the time when a website drops - it hasn't.
All that has happened is that other websites have risen to replace yours.
But if Google wipes all your PR and Removes your cached page not only are you starting afresh, you are starting with a red flag saying i tried to cheat.
Basically he had become a bad restaurant that Google would not really want to go to.
Why should they?
Yeah $5 = cheap - But is that all your business is worth.

Hi Ali,

Thanks for sharing this, do you know what format the report was in?

Thanks

Thats something that catches a lot of people out. I know a lot of you know this:

For example , take the following url, it will get personalised and will give misleading results:
google.co.uk/search?q=lolcats

There are various parameters you can append to the url to 'tweak' it.

Turns off Personalised Web Search. This is the most popular pitfall.
google.co.uk/search?q=lolcats&pws=0

Sets the geographical location so that would mimic someone using google in Canada
Not entirely useful here, but I use a similar method when I'm checking the results on google.com for East Coast /West Coast.
google.co.uk/search?q=lolcats&gl=CA

There are loads of others, just google 'Query String Anatomy'.

Another real easy solution to avoid fiddling with the URL is to install the Google Global Extension by Redfly Marketing. Its available for Chrome & Firefox. What it does is de-personalise a search and select from a number of different Google, US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland.
