I've had a cold call from these people offering so many "Impressions" (showing your advert) on Facebook pages. They want £299 a month for UK coverage that's for 15,000 "Impressions". Seems to me like a good way of blowing your marketing budget for little or no return. Any body had experience using this?

"Impressions" are not worth paying for, the name of the game is targeted clicks from people actually interested in buying your products.

Sorry - in my comment above I missed it was for impressions. On FB you can opt for a per click cost. Far more effective due to the way people use FB - a single user could see your ad 10 or 20 times in a single session - it would burn though impressions very fast.

We've only recently started on it, but click through rates seem to be very low on Facebook - unlike Google Adwords (on their direct search) people are not generally searching for a product or service.

They sound a bit worrying, since you are only paying for impressions, As others have said you can manage your own facebook ad campaign yourself, if you are only new i would recommend buying a few courses to give you a head start and learn some of the tricks and strategies already being used by successful marketers. Jonathan Volk just came out with a really good one or try Ryan Diess.

Like all PPC you do need to test and be prepared to have a testing and learning budget as it can take some time to work out the winning formula for your product.

Facebook is different from Adwords but it came be very profitable if you know what you are doing.

The same company offered me something similar for only £199. The impressions are not limited, they offer unlimited impressions, but only guarantee a certain amount. If its an advert only to gain you exposure you're after then its not unreasonable. If it's clicks and conversions then you should weigh up the effort to do it yourself and your cost per click before committing to it. If you only get 10 clicks and no conversions then it's very expensive !!!!

I've tried Facebook PPC and it was the lowest conversion rate of any type of advertising campaign I have ever experienced in my life. Impressions and clicks aren't the issue, it's people parting with their dosh.

Perhaps [like me] people on Facebook are there to speak with their mates [and not like me] and play applications, and not in a buying mood, simply clicking on the adverts as they are there - the relevance factor is quite impressive to the point of being scarey sometimes.

Don't be too quick to judge - I'm not saying it's acceptable for ANY salesperson to be rude, that's completely out of order - but as with ANY advertising, it's about exposure. If you haven't got the time/inclination to do it yourself you could be missing out on a fantastic route to market. I've mucked about with Google, Bing, SEO, done it myself, used one of these Companies, cancelled it and gone back to it myself. Whatever you do, the point is Facebook can give you MASSIVE exposure for your products. What I DON'T get is why these companies sometimes employ idiots to get what is actually a very powerful message, out there.

Just had a nice chat with someone from First Point (NOT) - who told my staff member that they were from facebook - otherwise I wouldn't have taken the call!

This is the 2nd call I've had from these idiots - and they were asking for more money this time.

I said I was very dubious, and asked if they had past customers I could call that would give a recommendation about them. He answered "No because of Data Protection" - what a load of bull!

Also, they have no facebook fans and think it's a little strange that a "facebook marketing company" isn't using facebook to market themselves in the slightest.

Ok, maybe it just isn't in their "strategy"? But when I said I'd be happy to do a free trail :)p) he hung up! How rude!

Quite right, ive had campaigns on Facebook and they were useless. Never pay for impressions they are worthless really, get you noticed but ROI is what you want and i found that my analytics was showing completely different figures to what FB was saying so i dropped it quick -cost a fortune too.

I like the free trial that always speeds up the call! :)

I know of some businesses that thrive on there but for a lot of people its a no no. The other key thing is that whnever anyone rings to hook you remember if they were any good you would be ringing them!

Yes I've just had First Point on the phone offering the £199 per month deal 'reduced' from £299 for impressions.
I told him I would not be able to cope with the extra work as just a sole trader :) TBH I already have a business page on FB and would my own ads if I decided to spend money on there.
I find google adwords can be worthwhile but there is nothing to beat natural search on google if you are lucky enough to be listed on the first or second page for a product. It can take a long time to get there but don't give up.

I've looked at the stats for a few facebook ads campaigns that have been running and even when you target the ads to a city, the number of impressions that can be achieved is phenomenal.

People selling Facebook Ads based on the number of impressions are a joke. I have seen a company (can't remember the name) or have different packages depending on how many impressions they will guarantee you. With Facebook ads, it is the demographic you target that depends on the number of impressions. therefore all these companies will do is set a wider demographic at initial set up so you get what they guaranteed. For them, I imagine they do no more work whether guaranteeing 100 impressions or 1 million.

They are playing on the fact that very few people understand Facebook ads.

Do not use anyone offering this model.
