How do you find staff?

I am desperately looking for a Gas Fitter. I have advertised on recruitment websites, and used a local recruitment agency, but just can't seem to find one! We are offering a decent package so I know it isn't that! The last guy we offered a job to decided he wanted to accept another job offer lecturing at college, the previous one didn't take it because the van we are supplying with the job is for business use only, so now I am back to the drawing board - again!

We have so much work I need to get more labour and I don't want to go down the route of a sub contractor. So idea please?!

The use of a company vehicle for personal journeys can make it or break it to be honest, was there no compromise available there? Surely you could of come to an arrangement. I know of someone in my industry who only last week knocked back a job offer from one company because of the very same thing and accepted an offer from another because a van was provided for his use, providing he paid towards fuel and produced receipts every month to show it.

so many problems with vans, i sacked someone for grossly over using a van i had given him (he has a car too!) was told the van was for work only, we have them tracked and he was using it for over 150 miles a week extra on my fuel and then lying to say he wasnt using it.

I would be careful about letting them use a van for personal use, a little bit of give/take if they are going to the shops on the way home from work but my staff member was going to his caravan, fishing etc in mines.

Have you tried business gateway, trade websites etc? We found a staff member on a website in our trade

Sort of depends right? Are you looking for someone long-term or short-term? When I wanted to expand the office and get a wall broken down I looked at humresconstruction.co.uk to find someone who could do the job.

If I am looking for someone who is more a ‘white collar’ worker, I could go on any of the other large websites for those. It really depends on what you are seeking. Gas fitter though – tough one.
