I want to check up on a person to see if he is a proper company, he might be using another name on company's house so that might not help, or he might be sole trader.
What I do believe is that he operates a business on a web but pays no tax or vat, and has been doing this for years.

What you believe and what could be the truth could be 2 different things and making assumptions like he don't pay tax or vat is purely heresay unless you have 100% proof.

There seems to be a lot of "Mights" in your post which means you don't honestly know yourself so i would be very careful in what you say or do without proof cos then it could be you getting into trouble.

If he is a sole trader than I think you are going to find it difficult to find much about him.

If he is the director of a limited company then you can search for him on websites like CompaniesInTheUK and you may find the true name of his company if you suspect he is operating under a trading name

Having said that, I agree with Anonymouse72 that you are treading on dodgy ground making accusations which you may not have proof of. My suggestion would be to send what information you have to HMRC and let them investigate and take appropriate action; they have investigation departments for this exact reason

some people would like to give the impression that they are "a del boy", making money and not paying taxes, but in reality they are paying everything as it becomes due, but it suits their personality to let people think they might be a little dodgy (I know a few market traders who trade on the del boy image, but they are totally legitimate).

If this is someone you plan to do business with simply ask them for some references/VAT number/letterhead/business card and do your own due diligence.

Do they actually look at this sort of thing according to Anonymouse72 I/ anyone has to have 100% proof does that mean that if you have 95% proof they will not act.
If this is the case then no wonder people screw the system, but thanks for the information.

if you've provided factual & detailed info to HMRC, the probability of it being looked into increases. i would imagine that they have a limited amount of resources for these investigations & the amount of false/inaccurate/non-proceedable info they receive must be vast. if they don't look into, i don't see what else you can do.

Yes I bet they do have a lot of false or inaccurate information, and thanks for the information, has for HMRC being understaffed they should train more people up from, what we have found out how these so called guard dogs are more like Yorkshire Terrier Pups.
Let those without sin cast the first stone, but 3/15 years of doing jobs on the side in cash or straight to his private account is overdoing it.
Again thanks and yes it would not surprise me that HMRC would not do nothing, but then I do think they will act when we post them what we now have in our possession.

Have you actually checked his company details at Companies House yet?

Sadly, I have reported two people in my time that I know do not pay the correct amount of tax. I knew 100% and explained in details everything, I even gave their work address, home address, address of their equipment, their accountants details which i explained knew of their little forgetfulness when it came to the amount they earned. Absolutely nothing was done and this guy was stating he only too 2,000 a month. Can even see it looking at the documents they file with company's house. he really was walking away with 80k a month... It sickens me.
