Hi everyone,

Why isit so hard to find a business partner? I have a project/idea to work on but i would find it much easier if i had a partner. I want some one close to my age(i'm 20) and they would have to have some sort of graphic design experience.

I have spoke to several business advisors and they have all agreed it is a good idea with minimal investment.

I refuse to work with family or friends as i have vowed strictly to never mix my personal life with business...

Did any one else ever have this problem? if so how did you overcome it?

Please share your stories.

The problem occurs when you are in the business with your partner and you find that you cannot work with your partner. Happens too many time I'm afraid.

If you do go into a partnership make sure you put a good agreement in place to protect yourself.

you're looking for someone to share the risk. thats a very big ask for two people who have never met eachother before let alone worked together.

i doubt you'll have much success outside your family or friends circles.

how else could someone know you were fully committed?

Hi Michael,

I wouldn't go into partnership, it can often cause more problems than good. Whilst the prospect of having two heads, with two different skill sets can seem irresistable, it is often not the reality, as you and your business partner will more than likely have differing ideas on where the business should be and what it should be achieving.

You've outlined that you are looking for somebody with some kind of interest/experience in graphic design, take a look at your local university, advertise a temporary/ongoing position for a graphic designer, even if you only need them for one project. It is commonplace to find somebody with skills that match your criteria, and you needn't give up a percentage of your business idea to find what you're looking for.

I would strongly urge against looking for a business partner. If it is financial support you are looking for as part of a deal, then please let the forum know and hopefully, people will point you in the correct direction.

Hi Michael,

It may be an idea to consider having a chat with a Mentor/Consultant with
experience in design who could make some constructive suggestions and
may help you avoid getting in to an unnecessary 'partnership'. More than
happy to help!

I would go into partnership with a friend, but only certain friends. They would have to be dedicated and have good business sense and think along the same lines as you.

Honestly i personally wouldn't go into partnership with a complete stranger, they may have different motives, they may not be as dedicated as you and you probably wont find all this out until it's too late. At least with friends you can work out they're good and bad points before you ask them to become a partner.

I do understand wanting a partner. We work best as teams. It not only gives us someone to bounce ideas off and someone to see opportunities or dangers we miss. It is also someone to be accountable to and it is natural. Its more fun to work with others than alone.

I would suggest to the op to mix with others while going it alone but keep open to a partnership if you meet the right sort of person.

I thought I needed a programming partner to compliment our in house skills. However I have been able to contract that out very successfully. Meanwhile we are planning to work with others of a quite different skill set who came into our horizons recently and it looks as if it will be very productive. It opens a new market up for us and 2012 looks exciting!
