Hi,

As a marketing man for a small UK software company I want to gather data about how people use MS Windows.

Specifically relating to files and finding your files.

Take a second to complete my poll.

If you are the type of person that falls under numbers 1,3,5,6, I want to know details what you do for a living!

Do you ever lose your files using Windows XP or greater?

1) Yes, I am constantly losing files and it frustrates me
2) Yes, but I use windows search and generally find what i'm looking for
3) Yes, I use windows search but often I still cant find them or it takes too long
4) Yes, but the search features in Windows or other applications allows me to find them
5) I am looking for free/cheap Organisation, Search & Retrieval tools

Hello, hope this helps.

7) I don't lose files, as a admittedly am quite OCD with filing.
I often find that no amount of free software etc will making people not lose files. Windows has all functionality you need to simply name and store files.
The key is making sure you have the right naming conventions, and a good file structure. I can't see how other software can help with this that Windows can't.

However - the questions becomes a lot more interesting if you are asking about files for a group of people! At my work, finding project files worked on my a dozen+ people is a nightmare, and constantly needs re-organising, and getting people to agree to filing conventions. Cloudbased services are bcoming really strong at supporting this now however..

i back up my data too. I feel there is a difference between losing a file and not being able to find it!

the other day i was looking for a file i know i saved somewhere on my windows client. but it took me ages to find it because i didnt know its name. I had to use lots of back door techniques to get there. Techniques that I feel many non-IT professionals dont know about.

So I lost it, but it did exist. rather than losing a file because its deleted.
