file sharing on a website

Is it at all possible to access a file through a website? I know you can put a link to a particular document but can you put a link to open a complete file?

You can upload files to your web directory that are not part of your web site

I am confused, a document is a file. Maybe if you tell me what you are trying to do i can help. Are you trying to link to a file on YOUR server, are you trying to access a file on someone elses?

It is a simple case of http://yourwebsite.com/yourfile.exe (.zip/.jpg/.rar etc.)

Make sure you have the correct permissions set on the downloadable files, some webservers may send out incorrect headers for certain file types so you may need to look into that as well if your struggling.
