Hi everyone, i fell out with my accountant today over some really high fees he tried to charge me for making phone calls and writing letters ect. , i said no way and he resigned as my secretary.
I have a small limited company and i was wondering if an accountant is really nessesary?
Does anybody do there own accounts, if so is it difficult?
Who can i get as a new company secretary? is a secretary absolutely nesessary?
Id be really greatfull for any help and advice,
thanks
John

Hi John

There is no longer a requirement to have a company secretary:

Companies House said:
From 6 April 2008 a private company does not have to have a company secretary, but it can choose to include in its articles of association a requirement to have one. An existing private company that decides to terminate the appointment of their secretary must notify that termination to Companies House on a form 288b. A public company still needs to have a company secretary.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about your accountant trying to rip you off. I think it is possible in theory to do your own accounts but personally speaking I wouldn't attempt it. I know I would end up paying much more tax than necessary, simply because I wouldn't know how to structure the business to take advantage of the various allowances.

Where are you based? I can give you the details of my accountant if you like - he's based in Central London. And don't worry - he won't charge you for phone calls!

Best wishes,

Emily

    Hi

Sorry to hear you've been having problems.
There are plenty of us these days who won't charge you for phone calls/ letters/ emails.

I do advise on apppointing another accountant - getting the Ltd Co accounts format correct and keeping up with legislation is tricky and time consuming, and a good accountant should save you in tax and stress more than their annual fee.

If you aren't concerned about face-to-face (I'm in Wiltshire), then I offer a national service and would be happy to see how I can help you.

    Best of luck

    Jenni :)
