I've created a group and a business page for my site. Had quite a few referrals from it so far. I think I've acquired about 16 fans on my business page so far without actually trying. I need to do more with it really and invite people. I know one lady who runs a women's networking site who's got about 7000 members now I think mainly via her Facebook group and an ad she placed.

Hi,
You need a personal Facebook profile first as groups and your business page need to be linked to that i.e. you can't just join Facebook as a business.
The link to setup a business page is

http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/create.php and then I think I selected Brand/Product and went from there. Once you've filled in your info you can invite people to be a fan.

To create a group you need to select the Groups page and then select Create a Group. Once you've filled in the details you should make yourself administrator. I haven't done anything with my Group really as I created it by mistake instead of a business page.
If you get stuck select Help as all the instructions are there - I don't mean RTFM by the way it's just they explain it better than I can - I still find Facebook a bit confusing!

I know a lot of people who use Facebook very regularly for personal social use, and get quite a few e-mails from groups etc. letting them know about events, promos etc. If it is something that interests people they will become a fan and you can then hook them in!

I opened a facebook fan page for my online Indian takeaway called curry me home (not sure if I'm allowed to paste the link here but you can search it on FB). And i think its a great way to get in touch with your customers however recently i noticed facebook have restricted some features, for example i cant view all my fans - i get the following message "To use this feature, you will need to sign up for a personal Facebook profile."

Hi chs117 - We've been using facebook for a while now - Do a search for CHOCHALAL

We started as group and have not moved to a fan page. Fan pages are better for tracking the actual hits etc so you can see if your advertising works. We use the group to get lots of feedback & suggestions on many areas. We put up most of our marketing material before we print it as we get excellent feedback from the members.

Please give me a shout if I can help at all.

I've heard clickthroughs are very low on Facebook, mostly because people go there to socialise, not to find goods and services. Could be worth asking Steve Gibson or one of the other internet marketing geeks their view before you part with your cash.

I have considering facebook - But, as you say above I feel people go to facebook to chill out, see friends etc...

However, I do think facebook is an excellent viral marketing tool - I know a few people who are marketing their business and services through groups and then inviting others to join.

People do not want to be sold stuff when they go on social networking sites like facebook. However they do want to be informed of things which they may find useful or interesting. I set up a fb group for one of my novels and it very quickly got around 70 members because people were interested in it. However what I don't and will never do is subscribe to the reprehensible practice of carpet bombing members of my group with advertising by messaging them every couple of days. In fact, I wouldn't dream of group messaging them unless I had an announcement to make like "I just won the Man Booker prize." :D

A very dear friend of mine has a restaurant in Sheffield and used to use his facebook to send announcements to everyone in the group every couple of days and it got to the point where it was just too much, and I told him so! Anyway, Gordon Ramsey's told him off now coz he's going to be on Kitchen Nightmares this winter. In fact I believe Gordon is there right now. The restaurant is now called Silversmiths.

However, having said all this, I do want to send an invitation to subscribe to my new business newsletter to everyone in my personal fb. But I won't subsequently carpet bomb them with messages.

My motto in life is "Do as you would be done by" and the same goes for business.

btw my profile is here if you want to invite me to be a friend. But don't then subsequently do a business carpet bomb job on me or I'll delete you!

and welcome to the forums :)

What do you mean a welcome from the mods?

Cheers

You don't need to be a mod to welcome people sm1; bothering about forum hierarchy is a bit lame, aren't we all here to help one another in what is a tough world? :) Welcoming people is just being friendly to newcomers and is to be praised and encouraged.

hi ,

we just finished a viral campaign for the scottish qualification authority , it was students who wanted to find out about there exam results and discuss the stresses with other students online.

gr8 project it works very well , starting groups and creating virals for the pages works very well , we also replicated the idea on bebo & myspace .

the project will be back next year , if you need any help on this let me know.

I have just set up a business page, but am a little unclear how I get fans onto it. My business is Custom Rubber Stamps and second hand books. So far I am the only fan.

Hi LongNeck. I am a big fan of rubber stamps and have a huge collection ;)

The way I'm using facebook is the other way round. Rather than going on there and trying to use it as a business networking tool from scratch, I registered a personal facebook account a while ago and now have about 250 "friends" on there, many are friends, but nowadays people I don't know come on and ask to friend me, which is fine and dandy. And sometimes through various connections I end up having some "friends" whose work I've admired for years - a multi-award winning film score composer is one example on my facebook friends.

So when I set up a new group, what I would do is ask these friends if they want to join. There's a drop down list and you can just pick who you want, although I wouldn't be selective and would just invite them all.

So, if I were in your position, I would use the tool (facebook itself) for what it says on the tin; social networking, and then as an aside introduce your business. Think of it as going to a party and someone asking what you do, so you whip out your business card, tell them a bit, and move onto another subject. People do not like being bombarded with your business, it's of far more interest to you than it is to them. Unless, of course, you're a celeb, in which case people will still not really be interested in the day to day nitty gritty of your "business" but only in the surface sheen they perceive to be reality. Watch peoples' eyes glaze over when you tell them about the publishing industry, or standing round all day on film sets, or the reality of making an album in a studio...

Thank you for your very lengthy reply. What you suggest is intact what I have done to date except I have used a business page rather than a group. Inpages there does not appear to be the facility to invite friends only to contact fans once they are added.

I have sent a message to my 78 friends. Just wonderf how to get it to spread future. This my first real move into viral marketing.

For any other readers interested in what this thread is about the page van be found within facebook, by entereing 'long neck' in the search. When offered a filter choose pages.
