Hello All

I am looking for some help with a bit of industry knowledge, I wanted to know if there was a commonly used EPOS platform or an industry leader, mainly within the retail sector, not really the Cafe, Restaurant and Bar sectors.

I understand that there is a number of nichè POS providers out there but is there an industry leader? Or more commonly used platform?

Any help/thoughts appreciated.

search for epos in the forum search bar. There are discussions ad nauseum. Many, if not all, claim to be industry leaders - it's a marketing phrase that means absolutely nothing. Take your time and choose the one that will give you what you want - you may not need a lot of the stuff that they are "leading the industry with" so you won't want to be paying for it.

Write a wish list of things you want to be able to achieve- stock control, web sales, loyalty programme, stock analysis, pre order advice, levels of staff access, credit notes, invoicing, cash control, integrated card payment, support levels, training required... the list goes on. Once you know exactly what you want, only then should you start shopping

Hi Gambet,

Yes, most will claim industry leader status, unfortunately. But as said it's best to think in detail about what you want from the system - they all have different strengths and weaknesses.

What kind of products do you sell in your store? If you're selling in a specific industry then it may be best to go with a niche player that caters to the unique demands you have.

If not, then budget and integrations should be your deciding factors :)

We've just transferred to VEND Epos and after a few days in, very happy with the system in our retail store. Support is hit and miss depending on who answers your query but they're generally pretty good. But the support is 24/7 which is superb! We also gained some good advice and answers to our Hardware queries from https://storekit.co.uk/ :)

The most common ones out there are VendHQ, ShopKeep, Shopify, Revel, Lightspeed POS. Lightspeed actually has a global presence in over 100 countries and over 40,000 businesses use it for either retail or restaurant. It all depends on the type of business you run, however. Lightspeed is a great fit for small-medium sized businesses. Check out their website to see some of their features. I would suggest trying it out for free to see if it fits your business' needs. Good luck!

Retail nowadays isn't only about selling in store so would make sense to look at ePOS Systems that provide multi-channel selling capabilities you should take a look at www. ShopTill-e .com as this has great inventory management and control across all of your selling channels it provides a hardware friendly ePOS / till system for your in-store sales, a sophisticated eCommerce Web Shop combined with the ability to sell on the Internet Marketplaces of Amazon, eBay & Tesco. Why limit yourself when you can have a system that provides all this!!??

Hi,

Depends entirely on what you are looking for. Traditionally the EPOS Software community has centered around larger business who had bespoke software written specifically for their needs this usually involved the larger players in the market such as Microsoft, NCR, Micros, IBM, Casio, Toshiba among others.

More recently as you have suggested and as popular features of ePOS solutions became more defined, smaller players in the market have begun to develop their own solutions, the newer ones moving into the tablet based market. As a result the cost of these solutions has come down and into the price range of Individual merchants.

As you have also noticed this happened a lot more quickly in the hospitality industry than it did the retail due to the pressures on hospitality business to compete and the complexity of the required solution, ePOS was as a result was adopted more readily. You may also be interested to know that the guys who develop, distribute and installed these types of systems in pubs and restaurants typically tend to be the same guys who used to work for NCR back in the day. One of the largest providers of software in this market is ICR Touch.

Retail wise EPOS is still in its infancy and it is uncertain at this stage I would suggest who the major player will actually be. Currently there are a lot of app/cloud based solutions which now have the kind of features all retailers want. the range extends from Windows to iOS to android systems and even the hardware market is changing with IBM completely pulling out, Toshiba is on the rocks and Casio is struggling, Samsungs SAM4s offering is consistently seen in the ePOS industry these days these days and there are a plethora of others to choose from.

Suffice it to say the market is heading in the software as a service direction and the hardware is designed to last for a limited amount of time due to the fast pace of technology superseding technology.

Kind regards,

Alex Paterson
