Hey all,

We run a UK electronics repair company and often have to procure spare parts like small electronic components from the USA. We usually buy from large global distributors such as Mouser, Digikey, Online Components etc. The arrive in the UK by whichever carrier the supplier has used to ship - typically UPS.

Over the last few months we have been getting several requests a week from UPS asking what the import clearance instructions are. Specifically the HS code. Often we find that the HS code from the supplier is invalid when we look it up.

The problem is that these parts are ordered by engineers which are often technical in nature and poor old admin in Goods inwards have no clue so are struggling to even look up the correct code.

This begs the question... who is responsible for specifying the correct HS code, the distributor / exporter or us as the recipient? it seems disingenuous for it to be us as we didn't manufacture the parts!

Hi,

Sorry i saw this yesterday and it sounds odd.

Firstly it is your responsibility but its not difficult.

UK trade tariff
Search for Commodity/HS codes
Enter commodity description
Search for most applicabble commodity code.

Believe something like a part for a tv or radio would fall into 8543 prefix These codes are either 8 digits for import or 10 Digits for export.

Maybe to speed it up and prevent UPS delays you should ensure a commercial invoice displaying commodity code is included from your supplier.

Hi, as the importer you have the legal responsibility to provide the correct commodity code and customs value, these will dictate the duty and vat amount payable upon import.
I am a an independent customs broker and it is a common exercise to ask the importer for instructions, as at the end of the day, the importer is liable for any debt that may arise.
