Encryption software (preferably free)

I have some folders on my hard drive which contain confidential information (personnel, elderly relatives' finances, etc) which I need to encrypt (I do not need to encrypt the whole drive). Can anyone please recommend (free) encryption/decryption software? I have looked on the web but there are a multitude of these. Thank you very much.

1. https://eraser.heidi.ie/ (permanently delete files)

NTFS blahblah Microsoft encryption SHOULD give you the protection you're looking for, given the threat you've listed.
