Employing someone: what do I need to know?

Morning all!

Right, I will very soon be employing someone for a very small start-up business. I am completely new to this, and to complicate things further he will be coming from Republic of Ireland.

What I know so far:
- He will need a national insurance number, which will require him attending an interview at the JobCentre with proof of residency (such as a rental agreement), proof of employment (letter or something similar) and birth certificate/passport.

That's it though, the rest I am very sketch about, so keen to hear from other small business owners with your insight.

- Do I need employer's liability insurance? If so, where do you recommend my getting it from?
- Do I need to register as an employer?
- How do I set up the salary payment, can this just be through BACS or does it need to be done differently so they are taxed and student loan repayments are taken off
- Anything else I need to know?

Many thanks,
Duncan

IMO the first thing you should do is contact the Federation of Small Businesses. They can help you with employment issues, what documents you require etc etc. Over and above that they have a very good legal helpline for things such as tax and employment disputes plus they may be able to help you save money on your Employers Liability and Public Liability Insurance.

If you look on the HMRC website there is information on registering as an employer. They send a lot of helpful information through when you've registered.

Within the pack is a CD which calculates how much you give your employee (net pay) when you enter the gross payment details in. You can then pay the net pay however you wish. The tax taken off you then pay to HMRC (details in pack again).
