Employing someone in another country

Does business link or anywhere else provide information on this? I'm not talking about bringing a foreign person into the UK, or visas, but hiring someone remotely to work for my company, from their own country.

I hire contractors abroad but wonder what it would be like trying to employ someone - which country's laws are applicable, or if it's a special case.

Anyone have any links, or personal experience, in this area?

I don't have a specific answer, but wouldn't it be easier to sub-contract the work to them so that they are self-employed and invoice you for work done? They are then responsible for paying tax/NI equivalent.

As a virtual assistant, I do this with clients in other countries and know that there are many VAs in the US and Australia who work for clients in countries other than their own and who are responsible for their own tax etc.

I am sure that it would be a mine field of employment law - bad enough employing someone in this country let alone someone abroad.

Definitely this is easier. But they're more transitory, an employee you might train up but a contractor you expect to know how to start quickly, and cost more as a result.
