Employing casual staff - how does this work?

Good Morning!!

I am starting a new venture which is really exciting...whenever possible and in line with our ethical policy and community-commitment, I would like to give work to people with little or no career prospects. This work would most likely be on a casual "per job" basis, and don't envisage having them on payroll, so wonder how this works with regards to HMRC/PAYE/NI etc..

I would have thought that I could take them on much like someone would take on a builder to do some building work, and they would invoice me when they are done for the job completed. They would then have to do their own accounts and self-assessment to declare their income, and I would simply put their costs down as start-up costs or cost of sales.

Also, how would employer liability work? Would they be covered, or would they need to get their own insurance as it would be a contract and not full employment?

Does this sound right? Are there any GOOD, CLEAR advice pages on HMRC or any other sites that you could point me to?

Many thanks,
Duncan

Sysops - fair point...the problem is that I have specific people I want for specific jobs, I know who they are, and don't want anyone else... so, short of them joining the agency, how would I go about doing what I want to do?

Any ideas or thoughts welcome.

Easy - we have this sometimes. Just get them to sign up with a temps agency! Most agencies are only too happy to have more people on their books.

Can you tell I'm a big fan of agencies ;)

If you are controlling their place and method of work then you will need to have Employers Liability in place. Whilst not legally required, you should have Public Liability cover to cover your business and all activities that you undertake.
