Employers liability insurance for school work experience

Hi,

My company is Ltd but I work work alone at home providing a product design consultancy. My grandson wishes to come for a single week of work experience next year and I have recieved a form from the school which mandates that employers liability insurance must be in place.

The work is at my home office and is CAD design on a computer only. He is a family member. I have obtained insurance quiotes but of course all apply for a whole year and the cheapest is about £150.

Durng my search on ELI I came across references that if the 'employee' is a family member then exceptions apply.

Do I really need the insurance and if so, any suggestions wher I may get cheaper short term insurance?

Thanks.

I suggest that you discuss this with the school and, if appropriate, their local authority.

The fact that you may not need employer's liability insurance if you employ a family member is not likely to be very relevant. The school and/or local authority will have rules on what is and is not acceptable for a work experience placement, currently that will include employer's liability insurance, you need to persuade them to drop that requirement for you to be able to offer the placement.

    Good luck with that!

We get these in droves and every time, there is a health and safety inspection that includes inspection of ELI certificate (that must be displayed in an office where employees can inspect it) a dedicated and named health and first aid officer (with suitable certificate!) and the usual H&S gubbins (exits, fire alarms, H&S declarations on the walls, extinguishers, you name it!)

It is a silly game, as the H&S inspector merely writes a report and the kids come anyway, even if you fail to provide the necessary fire extinguishers, are not insured and wouldn't know a tourniquet from an Elastoplast. You can, if you feel so inclined, replace the smoke detectors with an assortment of some of the more interesting sex toys available nowadays and those beastly children still will turn up!

Hi, yes there is an exemption for family businesses but this does not apply if the company is Ltd, also I would expect it is a condition of the schools insurance that they check this is in place before sending students to businesses (even if he is your granson).

Do you already have Professional Indemnity Insurance for your company? If so a number of insurers can include EL cover within the package. It might be worth a call to see if they can can include this for you.

    Best of luck

My sister in law employs personal assistants for her disabled son. She foiund that she could get employer liability as part of her household insurance. may only apply in her type of circumstances, but it would be worth checking.
