Hi All

Is this allowed and is it common practice?

At the moment im a sole trader and vat reg, i'm thinking of taking an employed role during the day and keeping my sole trader business going in the evenings and weekends all while staying vat registered to keep certain suppliers happy.

Is this allowed by the HMRC?

Thanks

Jason

Hi Jason
I think that you would simply need to:
1) Keep your payslips from your own company (if you receive any) and / or dividends.
2) HMRC / your accountant would be most happy if you did personal tax returns - even if you didn't need to (i.e. voluntarily) - this would keep HMRC happy.

Do keep tabs on your new employer insisting on you only having 1 job / 1 source of income. In my experience this is mainly to stop people working excessive hours / health and safety issues including not getting enough sleep or rest days; being safe at work; driving safely; not being a danger to others / you having the focus and energy and priorisation to get 'their' work done to a high standard.

Those aspects aside - I don't see that HMRC would have a problem with this.

Best regards
Dave
