Hi im wondering where I stand and what I can do in this situation

My manager has requested access to my work inbox. I e worked at this company for 4 months and have become friends with the IT guy. He text me this morning giving me a 'heads up' that she'd asked him to give her access.

I've got nothing to hide. I do my job I don't use my email for anything apart from work.

I'm wondering if she is allowed to request this without even telling me?
She's got a rep for being nice to your face and then stab you in your back.

Could I speak to HR in confidence about this? I feel extremely paranoid that she is trying to find something to use against me!

Also, I can't tell her I know she has access and don't want to get my friend in trouble

Don't talk to HR - just start sending people emails in which you say how efficiant and professional this woman is, how nice it is to work with her, what wonderful fashion sense she has etc etc etc ;)
That's funny:) But you really have to talk to HR and I'm 100% sure that he\she will tell you that it is stated in your contract. So just relax and continue working...of course if you used your work mail for work only ;)

Personally I wouldn't bother going to HR. If she finds out you have been, she may hold a grudge against you and it will probably cause more bother than its worth, and considering you've said all emails are work related you really don't have anything to be worried about. Just let her have access.
