Think I will put it in here and see how it goes though it could fit in the online section or legal.

I would like to target some local companies and new start-ups possibly using mail chimp or something similar.

However I thought it was illegal to contact someone via email if they had not agreed to the correspondence. Is this correct?

If so how do these purchased mailing lists work as surly your in the same boat?

TIA

Truth of the matter is, even though technically it is illegal, companies still use email marketing as a way to generate leads. I have been using this for some time now and generated a fair amount of business from it. I only contact local companies after I visit their website and see that I could actually help them (I run an online marketing company). I don't send out 000s of emails a day, always give all our contact details within the email and dont' send them numerous followups. If i havent heard back from them the first time, I assume they aren't interested.

Hi

Conversion rates for email marketing where there has been no previous contact is v v v low, so even if you do do this I would be amazed if you got much back apart from a few angry people saying remove.

Opt in emails are different i.e. if people subscribe to your company news letter through meeting them at events, signing up online etc.
