Electricians Mate Job Wanted

Hi,

My husband has recently retrained at 38 as an electrician. He has full C&G and has 17th Edition etc. The only thing he doesnt have is 2391.

He has re trained via one of these companies where you do a lot of self study from home and then some practical days at the workshop. This means he is qualified in theory but does not have a great deal of practical experience.

He is currently PAT testing being all that was available when he qualified but would like to start gaining more experience within the electrical industry.

If anyone has a business in and around the surrey, hampshire, berkshire area and they are looking for an electricians mate, please pm me further details.

Many thanks :)

any suggestions of anyone he could contact??

Hi Bear,

Not sure if will help, but worth a shot?

There is a national company called the Dodd Group who do alot of LA contracting work up my way and are always looking for sparks. I have never worked for them so I can't honestly say what they are like, but there maybe a local office you can contact to enquire. Here is their website: www-dot-doddgroup-dot-com (sorry I haven't done 15 posts yet and so I can't put the link in)

Another company that may also be worth contacting is Connaught Plc again a large company that may have something? Here is their website:
www-dot-connaught-dot-plc-dot-uk

I have my own business and I get regular calls from local people enquiring about work or apprenticships. This could also be another root option to try?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained?

Hope this helps!

Hi Bear,
It's tough out there at there moment, an electrician I have worked with and I have employed is scratching around for work. There is very little out there at the moment. He is in Essex and commutes into London.

If your Husband has a CSCS health and Safety card he could try using some agencies.

years ago when I was London based I used a few such as

Diamond M&E (based in Essex but do work in London)
Capitol (offices in Wimbledon and Harlow)
Galamanda (based near Highgate Be careful with this one)
Fast Track (do alot of work on the LUL and for that sort of work will need extra track awareness safety qualifications)

In the Classified section of the Evening Standard (but especially on Wednesday and Thursday)

And there is the old favourite which I did in the last recession walk onto sites and ask to speak to the electrical supervisor.

As your husband has the qualifications but not the experience I would suggest that he promotes himself as a mate and not as an electrician until he has a couple of years experience, otherwise he may find himself a mains cable the size of his fist to connect, or an electrical riser and be asked to install the MCCB circuit board. (circuit breakers 50mm x 150mm x 150mm).

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IF HE DOESN'T KNOW LET HIM TELL SOMEONE, AND GET THEM TO SHOW HIM.

The electrical contracting industry is so diverse there are alot of different aspects to it, when I run a job I would rather know that someone isn't so good at something rather than havibg to pay someone else to redo some work.

A few years ago I was working in a tile factory in Devon and was asked to connect some 3 phase motors. I said I didn't know how and it was explained to me. A couple of months later I was working in a shipyard also in devon. Again I was asked to connect a couple of motors but this time I knew how to connect them.

Good luck

Richard
