hi
i'm looking for a total solution to the ecommerce side of my business on a budget (who isn't!), which for information is traditional sports retail, clothing, equipment etc
i currently have a very basic and primitive site which has generated a few sales, but nothing like the potential that is out there
although not totally useless from a technical point of view, i don't have any time to dediate to that side of this project so need a ready to use option
i would like a really nice design with all the usual features and ebay, facebook and iphone integration, and plenty of shipping options
i will use paypal and a card provider
i will probably have up to 5000 products in the longer term, probably about 1000 now
something that is easily optimised and works well with google is obviously another essential requirement
i have been looking at things like magento, bigcommerce, frooition, bluepark, tigercommerce, but its hard to work through the jargon!
please advise
peter

Personally I use Magento. It's absolutely free and once you get the hang of it you realise it's quite a powerful piece of software. There's also a paid for version but that's only really for very big businesses.

If you're just starting out then I'd suggest Magento. There are no features missing or cut out that prevent you from taking your e-commerce site live in the free version.

I suppose most ecommerce scripts would cost alot to customise if you need someone else to do it...

However, from my experience, Magento is one of the most time consuming, not just to customise but to manage a store.

As I have said previously, Prestashop is very versatile, easy to use and easy to customise. It looks good, and is feature rich. There is also a huge community, and you will easily find someone who has already developed something you want (some free some not).

One of the best paid for solutions has also recently released a free version... CS Cart. They have a plethora of integrated payment options and features, and doesnt need much customisation, other than appearance... you can always buy a licensed version with even more features.

I have found best cutomer satisfaction with the above two in comparison to others, and I find them a breeze to work with...

No its not true, there are many good web developers that can do almost any update / customisation to Magento websites at reasonable costs. We develop and extend magento and update on a daily basis.

Yes the system is hard to master but once it is mastered its easy to work with and customise which enables us to keep costs to a minimum for upgrades and enhancements etc.

Alot of people are put off by the scale of this system and the complexity of it but personally I would say once mastered very few compare.

I might give Magento a look then. I've been put off by what i've read elsewhere on a number of occasions but there is much about it that I like the sound of.
In particular it seems to be one of the only carts which has dependant attributes.
Do any of the other carts offer similar, ie when you choose an attribute for a product you can then limit which further attributes are selectable?

I would look further into magento before you write it off, if you want I can talk you through the pros and cons, just give me a call tomorrow on 0114 321 8635, be happy to give you free advice on this.

We also have scripts we can migrate full data from most popular carts to magento inc all customers, orders, products, categories and attributes and usually takes less than a few hours to complete a migration

virtuoso design

i would recomend "opencart" free open source cart with lots of features such as paypal + google checkout API and royal mail item or weight based shipping. the admin CP is also by far the easiest to use even for the most I.T challenged people, it also give graphs on proft/loss and sales to-date on admin CP home page. It also has special offers and discount for wholesale and regular customer and even a coupon discount area. all features that are only in the paid versions of magento. there are lots of free templates and social network plugins available.

I've used Opencart before but use Zen Cart now as I prefer it. It's personal choice really.

Magneto seems scary but I'll probably get around to investigating it at some point.

I'd suggest getting some online demos and nose around the admin panel as that's where you'll spend most of your time and it's important to feel comfortable there.

Having said that Magneto's scary, I thought the same of Zen Cart when I first used it but now I'm a bit of a pro ;-)

I guess it comes down to functionality of the ecommerce package and whether or not it meets your requirements.

Have a good think about how you want your store to run. Are you loading these products in yourself or getting a feed from a supplier? If you're getting a feed, how will you import it on a regular basis to keep your stock up to date?

Any decent developer will be able to advise you on this before you part with your money!

Good luck in getting started.

We developed a script for magento that connects with one of your suppliers databases and updates stock and new products automatically every hour. :)

prestahop is fatally flawed in its product options generator - and they still havent fixed it.
Magento - very steep learning curve or heavy cost, then you have to master how to manage it - tread with caution.
What about an ecommerce app that embeds itself into your existing website and also in facebook , twitter etc - would that be something worth considering ?

Hi, just adding to your list of options... We've personally used and implemented for some clients the cs-cart and shopperpres. shopperpress is based on wordpress which makes it highly customizable and search engine friendly, and with thousands of plugins you can probably make it do anything you need. Cs-cart is also very flexible and stable too and has a very good support base.
