Hi everyone. I have been asked by a friend about the options for her business.

Currently, they have a specialist shop selling small items approx 2000 in total.
They currently have an opencart website and they are wanting to add an epos system for the shop to help track stock.

I would value any opinions on the best way forward.
Is opencart still a good option? Are there better options available?

I also notice opencart now has a cloud based version. Is the monthly fee worth it and which extensions come with it?

Thanks for your help

    Thanks @TotalWebSolutions !

There are loads of extensions that do that:

We still think it's great, that's why we still work with it.

The cloud version is still pretty new and is quite locked down so personally I'd recommend hosting the normal version yourself to give you full control.

IMO Opencart is still a very good option. I favour version 2.3.0.2 for general use. The latest version 3 uses the Twig templating system which I'm not a big fan of. 1.5.6.4 is good for small budgets, version 3 for people who want up top the minute technologies but 2.3.0.3 is a good workhorse for everyday use. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

I know what you mean but I personally wouldn't recommend anyone invests significant money in to a platform that's a whole major release behind. So I'd say go for the latest unless you have a very good reason not to such as an extension you depend on that isn't available for 3 yet.

I also know what you mean Paul. It's just the Twig issue. I've had more luck trying to understand the Lesser Key of Solomon. :)
Admittedly I haven't done massive amounts of work with Twig personally but whenever I've needed to do something or modify something it's been pretty straight-forward :)

I did read somewhere you can use standard PHP and Bootstrap and .tpl files on v3 with a bit of tweaking. I'd go for that combination.
Ah but ideally you don't want any PHP in your template files, all you should ever need to do really is output variables and loop over arrays - all other logic should be in the controller which means it doesn't really matter if you can't do anything complex in Twig.

Last year we had a good conversation with two companies at a trade fair, I bookmarked them for future use.....

    and

There are many options available. It depends on your budget and overall goals.

One of my clients uses Bluepark (which we did an integration with) and I now really like and was thinking to use on my wife's website, but it does not support subscriptions.

They also use Vend POS which again I really like as their documentation was brill.
