Am after an ecommerce solution that allows an input (height and width) that then interrogates a user-maintained database of height / width ranges with prices then it calculates

a, if that size is possible (within specified range)

b, the cost of that size (which obviously changes upwards as the product sizes get bigger)
c, the free format sizes are recorded and stored with the order

This is for a window blind ecommerce shop.

Currently we have used oscommerce, zen cart but this functionality isnt available with them.

You can use just any Ecommerce according to your business' qualifications. The most important thing is the shopping cart software that you will use to integrate with your Ecommerce. The problem is, there are a lot of points to be put into consideration when choosing a shopping cart solution ( as this is the core of all Ecommerce). Choosing the best shopping cart software solution for your business s pretty tough job. You have to make distinct comparison from its availability, function, features, convenience & its cost. For easier comparison, visit this shopping cart software comparison chart. Hope this will help you decide what shopping cart software is best for your business. :) :)

Your choice of system, ultimately, depends on your business and your business objectives.

Some people make a reasonable living out of an eBay or Amazon store. However, many don't (probably the vast majority). The advantage of these "cloud" stores is that they cost virtually nothing to set up, and because there is huge traffic to them, your chances of getting noticed are reasonable, and you may sell a few bits and pieces along the way.

But like any business, you need to have an objective, a strategy and an appreciation of the need to invest in it. More that 8 out of 10 eComm ventures cease within the first year - mostly because the people behind them either had poor business acumen, or believed that just having a website is somehow the panacea for running a successful retail shop.

The same rules apply to running any traditional business... You need to be competitively priced, you need to advertise and promote your business, you need to keep an eye on competitors and you need to be prepared to put money into the venture (as well as a LOT of time).

We have built over 200 eComm sites over the last decade and some of them are really doing well. Others are finding things difficult. What is interesting to see is that those that are doing well are also doing well in their traditional environments (bricks n mortar) and are aware that their site is really nothing more than an extra sales CHANNEL - and is not the business itself.
