you haven't said if you want to build the site yourself and therefore your level of expertise - or have a professional co do it for you. This may make a difference to the responses that you get.

whislt I'm here - I am having my clothing site built in Magento. A lot of big fashion companies use it, it's open source so there are loads of plugins - and it's pretty much seen as state of the art for e-commerce.

Hi PS,

There are lots of companies that can put together an e-commerce site for you; but it would really come down to the sort of budget you had in mind.

Always advisable to get a few quotes and options to compare - then you can make an informed choice and meet with the best.

Zen-cart is OK, but it is very old code, and has been well and truly overtaken by other packages, both in terms of architecture and features. Many other platforms that are a lot better are free

Joomla is a brilliant open source CMS, so long as you are using it for what it was designed for

The difficulty with threads like this is that you get recommendations from people based on their own views, often from people that either have a vested interest or people that have briefly skirmished with one system and then found another that fits their needs

There is only one real way to decide what platform is best, thats to sit and write down the exact needs - today both today, and in a few years, and then look at each system and see what is the best fit.

The exact needs are not really a brief list of things you want to integrate to, it is much deeper - covering payment processors, how postage and packaging is dealt with, how discounting and bundles are dealt with, how acocounts are dealt with. In other words - the practicable aspects of the business and the web aspects

Eventually you end up with a comprehensive list of "must haves" and a short list of "desirables.. then you find the best package for your needs

We are pretty platform agnostic - each has a flavour, each has a set of features and attributes - its just a case of matching them to the clients needs, and trying to future-proof the client in one

I'm using EKMpowershop in combination with MoneyBookers at the moment and it's great. Easy to setup - just get yourself a nice logo banner designed and it look good. Plus you can upgrade for a small fee to get very detailed stats on your site, which will help you no end when it comes to adwords (keywords, phrases etc...).

Moneybookers is also very simple and straight forward. All you need to a bank account, credit/debit card and verifiable address and you can have a merchant account.

I pay around £30 a month for all of that and I can't complain!

If you want idiot proof that looks good upto date and has modules that you can add into the shop at the touch of a button, then I would say Prestashop.

Paypal intergration for both offline and API virtual terminal users. Have a look at the site for the full specs. Good tech support and winning awards left right and center.

They have a demo for both back office and front of shop.

As mentioned above, this is going off my experience and somebody may say it's the worst they have used. Have a look and decide for yourself.

Remember, It's FREE and jam packed with features.

I build my own sites of all shapes and sizes and so I simply use 1shoppingcart and insert the appropriate links into my sites. its the easiest to use if you want to add sorts of customization to your sites but you need to either know how to build your sites or have someone build them for you.
