Hello, I started an electrical supplies business in 2013 and have just started building a new ecommerce website. I'm new to the ecommerce world and any advice and help would be appreciated. I'm currently adding product daily and trying to get my head around seo and social media posting and what I could do to drive traffic to my site.

Many thanks

First of all let me congratulate you for having venturing into eCommerce.

Driving traffic to a website can be done in two ways : Paid and Organic

If you are looking forward to quicker ways of gaining traffic and branding, paid ads is the way to go. If you are short of investments, your best bet would be the content you post over the website. Have a blog attached to your site and start posting good informational articles inorder to attract attention of the search engines AND its users. This should help you generate slow but steady traffic. You can use these articles as a source to share over social networks too.

You may also choose to do a mix of the two for combined benefits.

Good to hear your thinking about SEO whilst building your website.

Before jumping into building it, spend a bit of time thinking about the structure of your website. In my view, this is where SEO starts. A bad structure makes it harder for users to find the information they want and in turn Google.

Tip: Avoid creating too many layers of pages connecting to other pages.

Example: Baby Clothes Website Navigation

Option A
Home page > Baby Girl Page > Pink Dresses Page > Product A, Product B, etc

Option B
Home page > Baby Girl Page > Girls Dresses Page > Product A, B, etc

Option B gets the user there quicker. I'm sure there are better ways of structuring the site but just trying to show the concept.

It's very subjective but my rule of thumb is to get the user there quickly and at the same time take advantage of potential organic searches. Which means ensuring pages not only serve a specific purpose for users but also Google.

Good luck
Neil

Congratulations Tilly. As for a beginner SEO tip, my advice would be to focus on what your target audiences are searching for, using Google's keyword planner to find search terms related to your business, and implement a few on your site.
