Eco Friendly Packaging

Hi UKBF

I hope everyone is having a good day.

I wanted to ask everyone’s opinion on Eco friendly packaging. What do you use, do you find it easy to source and do you find it cost effective. As a packaging company we try are hardest to provide the things people want and offer these at competitive prices. We currently have packaging items that are bio degradable, degradable, recycled and sourced from sustainable sources but would like to do more.

I would welcome all your feedback on this matter.

I use ECO friendly paper in my magazine but I will tell you this much - it is not cost-effective. It does, however, give you the opportunity to use ECO Friendly in your marketing materials which can give you more sales.

Hi Bradley, it’s a shame that when we all try to use eco materials it does cost more. I agree as a marketing tool it can help with sales.

We don't need a great deal of packaging here but we tend to reuse cardboard boxes and bubble wrap that have been sent to us. We also use freecycle and lots of people tend to give away jiffy bags and boxes.

Its a shame that eco packaging does cost more but I suppose like everything once more people buy it hopefully the price should come down.

Another eco dilemma there-we don't want to stop people reusing and recycling packaging but we do need more people to switch to eco friendly packaging.

Recycled paper is commonplace and not what I'd call eco as the cleaning process uses lots of chemicals and wastes energy - trees on the other hand are NOT in sort supply and produce co2 which is good for the environment.

we recycle boxes and use shredded paper in small plastic bags as packing - not that were all hippy dippy - more to do with the fact we're tight Scots ;-P

Hi Sco Logic, i agree with you. we have customers going on about bio degradable items all the time, we have to inform them what bio actually means. The cleaning process does use chemicals and it does waste energy. Even though we are a packaging company we re use what we can to deliver our goods, the amount of packaging our suppliers use to deliver our supplies helps this.

Glad to see here you are doing the meaningful things for our environment,in fact,we are a chinese manufacture for eco-friendly packaging,we can tailor made different types of eco-friendly bags,like organic cotton bags,pp woven bags,nylon bags and so on,maybe we can talk about these products further if you have interests.

We are looking at recycling mixed plastics into a useful product. Bio-degradable packaging does not help if it gets into the recycling stream. It is a catch 22 situation.

I do a bit of everything for my eco-friendly baby store as it is important to me and my customers. I buy biodegradable bubblewrap and degradamailer (green) mailing bags. I also use shredded junk mail/catalogues and re-use boxes and other packaging that I receive. I also recycled jiffy bags sometimes. Yes, it costs more and I'm not sure which is actually the most environmentally friendly method but as I see it, every little helps and of course when my green customers receive their goods in recycled or bio-degradable packaging it makes them happy so is definitely a good marketing tool.

I too could do with some advice on eco-friendly gift wrap or gift boxes. I've got general green packaging but not the internal gift wrap. Does anyone have any ideas?

Isn't there a brown paper company that does very cheap internal packaging? I can't remember what they're called, I'll look it up.

most of the courier bags we use are classed as bio degradeable and come from our couriers anyway. For the rest we do try to use eco bags but the suppliers are usually out of stock.

we dont use recycled paper for the printers as the FSC told us it takes alot more chemicals & bleach to whiten paper.
Its better to use FSC paper from sustainable sources with trees replanted.

We do recycle or reuse everything that comes in & also reuse bubble rap from other firms locally.

I just wish most of them would recycle cardboard & plastic as it all goes in the bin unless we go a pull it out

Found the tinyboxcompany (UK) which seem to be working on it and fishlipspaperdesigns.com - but this is in the states and obviously not ideal to have it shipped over. Must be a good uk wholesaler somewhere that sells pretty recycled wrapping paper - not just for christmas?

When ever possable we always produce all our packaging / magazines, using http://www.responsibleprint.info/ this means that every part of the supply chain has been examined to measure and reduce the environmental impact

• papers with virgin fibre content must have FSC or PEFC certification
