Eco Tips for Cleaning

In this section we are providing some easy to make and use eco-friendly tips to help you reduce using of cleaning products in your households, which often contain unhealthy chemicals. We encourage you to try these tips yourself. We believe that buying cleaning products from the shops could be significantly reduced and substitute for home made products, that are easy to make and apply, and that will perform equally good job in cleaning your home and parts of your office. Home made cleaning products are environmentally friendly, safe for health of human and pets, and not least safe money from the household budget.

We encourage you to contact us and give us your feedback on using home made cleaning products or share your own experience so that information on how to clean our homes green and healthy to reach as many people as possible.

One easy way to avoid exposure to toxic substances, which are often found in cleaning products, is to make our own cleaning kit, with just a few simple items:

 • Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking soda)
 • White vinegar together with a few drops of lavender oil to give it a nice smell
 • Lemons’ juice
 • Natural brushes and cleaning clothes

Washing curtains
What actually destroys curtains is detergent that remains in the curtain tissue. Curtains should be washed with very little washing powder and if they are particularly dirty, should be soaked well in advance. Do NOT use softener during laundering. Rinse the curtains twice.

Dry carpet cleaning
This is an effective and harmless way to refresh your carpets.
Clean the carpet with a vacuum cleaner. Scatter the carpet with Bicarbonate of soda and spread it to evenly cover the area to be cleaned. Leave it overnight. Clean thoroughly and carefully with vacuum cleaner again. The effect is surprisingly good, colours are refreshed and odour absorbed from the air.

Windows cleaning
The easiest, fastest and most efficient method for cleaning windows and mirrors is to wipe clean them with just water with a little white vinegar in it. No additional rinsing is needed. Also good enough is just wipe cleaning with water and microfibre cloth. Vinegar will also prevent mirrors from blurring too much at high humidity.

Cleaning floors
Ceramic tiles: To clean floors covered with tiles mix in bucket warm water with white vinegar together with a few drops of lavender oil to give it nice smell. Depending on how dirty the floor tiles are, the frequency of cleaning them, and how heavy traffic is there, it may take a bit longer than using other products but it will give you a good workout. Using these natural products is especially important if there are infants or children crawling or playing on the ground, as chemical products could be harmful for kids’ skin.
To clean hard floors including parquet floors use damp cloth made of microfibre. Dilute solution of warm water and white vinegar could also work for dirty hard floors. In case of exceptionally dirty floors, use damp cloth that has been soaked in water mixed with some eco-friendly cleaning product.
Traditional cleaning and parquet floor maintenance products contain synthetic resins and other polluting products, and are not recommended for indoor use.

Cleaning the microwave
Place in microwave half-cup of equal parts water and lemon juice (or water and white vinegar). Turn on the maximum power for about 5 minutes. Wait for a few minutes before removing the cup and wipe dry the inside of the oven with dewy cloth.

Cleaning the oven
It is recommended to avoid the use of most commercially available products as they often contain caustic soda, solvents and other toxic substances, residues of which remain inside the oven and evaporating penetrate into the food placed. Clean the oven regularly with a solution of warm water mixed with bicarbonate of soda, or white vinegar, or lemon juice. In case of more dirt use make a paste from a few tablespoons of white vinegar mixed with a cup of salt and a cup of baking soda and use it to clean the inside of the oven.

Cutting boards and surfaces in contact with food
Make a paste of 1 part of water to 3 parts bicarbonate of soda to clean the surface and rinse after a few minutes. This method makes cutting boards clean, removes smears and unpleasant smell.

Fridge
Clean it by spraying a solution of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, then wipe clean with water. To absorb the smell from the inside of the fridge
Spread soda bicarbonate in a shallow plate and place it inside the fridge. The anti-smell effect lasts up to 2 months.

Sink, tabs and washing surfaces
Apply a paste made of water and bicarbonate soda, directly to the sink’ surface and rub with a sponge. It removes dark spots of surface and make it shine without causing scratches. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry with a piece of cloth. Bicarbonate of soda can be used as a non-abrasive cleaner and also neutralizes the smell of many chemicals.

Cleaning silverware
With the same paste of water and bicarbonate of soda rub the silverware then rinse with clean water.

Sanitary ware
Bath-tube can be clean with a dilute of warm water and bicarbonate of soda or warm water and white wine vinegar.
Vinegar is an excellent means to eliminate limescale and watermarks of sinks and taps. A sponge soaked in warm vinegar could perform excellent work, and then rinsed well with water. If limescale is too tough on tabs it is best to put them in vinegar, while limescale starts melting and then rinsed and returned to their place.
Toilet
Try to avoid using bleach, ammonia and other aggressive substances when clean the toilet – these substances are harmful to the environment and humans. Warm water and bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar would do a perfect work to eliminate dirt and germs in your toilet.
DIY -- Eco cleaning products

To unblock pipes and drains instead of products containing caustic soda
/sodium hydroxide/ or sulfuric acids, which are extremely toxic and harmful for human skin and eyes, use self-made eco cleaning products. They are not only environment-friendly but also household budget-friendly. An excellent way to unblock pipes is to mix 150g table salt and 150g Bicarbonate of soda. Pour this mixture into the blocked pipe and pour immediately and slowly a bucket of hot water. It is important to pour hot water at a time.
Using this cleaning method regularly guarantees you constantly unblocked pipes and drains at home.

Just to add to the above...

YouCantGoWrong, package cleaning maintenance products in highly concentrated form in water soluble sachets. These water soluble sachets are simply added to water where they dilute to form ready to use eco cleaning products.

They have a major environment impact by reducing plastic waste by up to 90%, reducing landfill by up to 90%, reducing paper and board waste by up to 67% and CO2 emissions by 97%.

Perfect for domestic and industrial use.

My favourite cleaning product is still elbow grease :D

Vinegar is useful too.

Another thing I do is to hang onto the last bits of bars of soap, when they get so thin and are hard to use - then you can use them to clean surfaces and so on. Very useful around the bathroom, take a sponge or cloth and rub the soap on it, then clean with it, and rinse it off - it does as good a job as anything could.

I disagree. Both salt and bicarb are highly water soluble and will easily be dissolved in the hot water. They are unlikely to come back out of solution unless the water evaporates, which is unlikely in any drainage system.

It's true that the material causing the block may settle elsewhere, but this is true of other methods like plunging and rodding.

We have been using lemon and vinegar from the time of our great grand parents, and the tips given by them are still relevant. It is better to use domestic cleaners then depending on the commercial cleaning products. They are quite affordable, and they do not have adverse effect on your skin.

The last thing you want to do is dump toxic chemicals into the environment in the name of cleaning.The basic supplies you’ll need to make your own green cleaners include:

* Distilled white vinegar (sold in the cooking section of most supermarkets)
* Baking soda
* Olive oil
* Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)
* Liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner's brand, natural plant oils found in most natural foods stores)
* Essential oils
* Microfiber cleaning cloths
* Newspaper
