Hi Guys

I currently have a wordpress site and am now going to start to offer products, orignally going to be around 100 items but this will grow

What are my solutions, i have read that the ecommerce for wordpress is not great so open to suggestions,

Have thought about keeping the sales away from the main site so this could be an option just toying with ideas for now.

Many thanks

Hi There,

As I have already said many times on this forums, I would suggest Prestashop, which is a free to use, open license, professional ecommerce platform that can handle well over 100 products and categories :)

If you are interested in a Prestashop online shop you might like to have a look at our current offer of 50% on our popular annual Green Wolf package.

Please let me know if you would like access to our demo shops and 'live' customer examples.

Best Regards,

Tim

Depends how many products you think it will rise to.

If you're selling 100-200 products related to CCTV and security systems then WordPress can handle it easily and is the best choice.

People who say WordPress can't do ecommerce are stuck in 2003.

If you think it might grow to like 1000 products in no time then I'd go for something a little more ecommerce focused and my choice is Magento.

To be honest it depends on the type of products you are offering, some extensions are better for certain product types / product customisations.

In general, Woocommerce is a good way to go if you are certain you are going to stick with Wordpress. It ticks most boxes without being overly proficient for one set product type.

Here is the link http://www.woothemes.com/woocommerce/

it will be security products such as cameras and recording equipment, I would like it based around wordpress because wordpress is simple and the site is already there themed

Just looked at woocommerce and also just looked at shopperpress both look good but not ever been involved in ecommerce there may be things i should be aware of

Initially it wont be more than 200 however if successful im sure we can migrate to something built specifically for more products

Out of interest what is the best for wordpress or what would you recommend

That settles it then, ill go buy the woo commerce and see then about my web guy getting the theme right

Thanks a lot guys

It's a free extension so no purchase necessary. Could even get a dummy wordpress install setup locally and play around.

It might be worth using a dedicated Woocommerce theme though just so the styling etc is spot on if you do go for it.

Plenty available on their site and on the usual Theme websites.

The current site already has a theme which we are really happy with so would need my current web guy to either get his head around this extension or find someone that has used the extension to integrate into our theme

Thanks again really helpful advice

IMO, Prestashop is not bad, but actually they have been talking about discontinuing it for years, and it appears to be a bit on a knife edge. We have had customers where they wanted an e-commerce solution (hate that word) on a budget and we have integrated WP store. After a while however they find that this is great for 100 or so products, but then we look to upgrade them to something like OpenCart or Magento. In our experience, the ecommerce base platform which is best supported, with best modules, and easiest integration of payment gateways, plus ones we can SEO are the one's which we tend to offer. Clearly client ease of use and integration is also highly important. Simply we have found one size does not fit all and that we recommend a base platform based upon customer requirement not on what we want to build in. Hope that helps

Exactly, so many people find a system and then try to make it work according to their needs, often resulting in unnecessary compromises, rather than listing their requirements and finding/creating the best system to fulfill their needs.

Thanks Guys for the responses

After further thought we may take this away from the current site and create a brand new theme and if were going to do it we may as well use a future proof solution

Theme design and eCommerce implementation whats a rough ball point figure we would be looking at this is security themed products Cameras, power supplys recording and such

The figure calculations should be bespoke based upon requirement. Generally, in my experience, it should be the case that if you know what numbers are availabel searched on Google in a 30 day period, you should be able to see how much of that traffic you can capture. General rule is spend more on advertising the site and less on the site design and development, while understanding that around 10% or traffic is available on any given search keyword or phrase by being on page 1, that increases by around 15-17% for top 5 and number 1 page 1 gets 24% of everything available. Caveats to this include site usability, competitive nature of the products, quality of the site and overall authority and trust it exudes. Page 1 is wonderful, page 1 with conversion is spectacular. Hope that helps
