Hi

I've had a customer who purchased an item from me, told me i had sent the wrong item, i foolishly resent him another one, again he said it's the wrong item. I finally asked for a picture, he sends me a picture, it IS the correct item, he just thought it would be 'softer' than what he wanted, even though the packaging labelled the firmness as the product as 'soft' (the 3 options being soft, regular, stiff).

Anyway, after sending these 2 items to Ireland (at my cost), the customer wanted a refund. Fine with me, asked to send back and would sort. As by now the refund window through eBay had passed (not sure how long it's open for, maybe 28 days?). I decided to refund with paypal, few weeks later hear that he's not had refund, turns out he doesn't have a paypal account he paid on eBay with his bank card, which doesn't show up on the eBay transaction (as far as i can see). Anyway, now the customer wants me to refund to their bank account. I would normally be fine with this in UK, however the bank charges £25 so he would be left with about £5 refund. Apart from the fact that the items were returned with boxes looking a bit dog eared (put that down to the post he used, but still...) now customer is being awkward regarding refund. Am i right in thinking as he paid through eBay (and subsequently paypal) i am within my right to say refund must be through paypal, especially given charges involved in alternate methods? Customer seems reluctant to simply open paypal account to get refund?

Surprised the matter has not already been "resolved" for you by Ebay, normally they're right in there taking the money off you.

What's happened to the payment that you made? eCheque? That must count for something, if the money is unclaimed that is up to them.

The problem with sending money by other means, aside from the conversion, is that Paypal refund may well turn up afterwards.

He needs to create the PayPal account to get his refund, up to him if he chooses not to.

"Refunds will be made with a PayPal credit. Buyers with an active PayPal account will simply log in to PayPal to claim the refund. Buyers without a PayPal account will be asked to create one with their eBay registered email address to claim the refund."

I thought if a customer paid using PayPal, regardless of whether they had an account or used a card, you could refund through PayPal and the refund will go to the card that was used to make the payment. I may be totally wrong on this, and I stand to be corrected.

This is why I asked my above question also. When customers have purchased using a card through PayPal (as a guest). If they need a refund it generally goes back onto their card. Takes around 1 week to do so.
