I sell consumer electronics on Ebay and Amazon which I have shops on. I'm a Powerseller on Ebay and Amazon also produces decent sales.

However, sales have slowed down recently. There could be many factors why this is the case, although August is generally a slow month (so I've heard and read).

I'm now thinking of opening an independent website with its own platform and stuff.

I want to know of other peoples experience from the transition from Ebay/Amazon to their own websites. Has it produced more sales for you? What kind of advice can you give? etc.

I would recommend in a high quality website with an affordable pricetag (if possible!). Consumers feel safe purchasing from a professional looking website - especially if the goods are high value.... good luck!

I had a friend that tried this a couple of years ago.

He was selling sports goods and memorabilia on eBay and doing a good job of it. He splashed out £1k on a website for it. It was quite a nice looking website, lots of keywords ranked okay, but never really took off.

Despite having a presence on eBay and Amazon, you will need to create a new presence for your website. This can be a very different process to using eBay and Amazon.

It's most definately possible, but it could take a bit of time.

My advice to you as a marketer is to go with your own site too.
Why? Because you will capture the sales of people who don't like using eBay and Amazon.

Different people prefer different selling platforms.

Yes it will be more work but you can always pay some-one else to manage the website for you while you concentrate on eBay and Amazon as before :)

cant you maximise your sales by refering people to purchase on your site if you get one and avoid fleabay fees amazon.? or dont they allow it...

It's not really allowed, but there are plenty of ways round it. The problem is that customers who like ebay/amazon seem to want to stay there and it can be quite difficult to shift significant numbers across to a website - even with discounts/incentives.

I would always advise people to have their own website in addition to ebay/amazon as a change in policy/strategy can easily wipe out your sales overnight. You need to treat it as a separate sales channel and it will be hard work to get going - especially in a competitive area like yours.

Best of luck.

Its a big wide world out there on the net... ebay and amazon are just part of it. Start a website and keep it completely separate from your ebay/ amazon account.

Concentrate on your site and catch the google audience, do your research on pricing as we found we could charge more on our site for products than we do on ebay/ amazon accounts. There is no point undercutting your ebay prices to please ebay customers.

We get daily emails from ebayers asking why we charge more on our website, and plenty of businesses and the public buying from our site. You can always given them a coupon code if you really want to.

PM me if you want advise on set up for the long term.

That's interesting. I always thought that the inconsistency in price would be seen as negative. I was planning to charge exactly the same.

Hi, I started on Ebay then built my own site. I ran the Ebay side down as the website built up and then stopped Ebay altogether about 2 years ago.

Put a flyer and businesss cards in your Ebay parcels offering a discount or freebie on their next order from your website.

With no Ebay fees to pay and being able to make your own business decisions there is no doubt your own web site is the way to go. Make sure its a good one though.
