Hi VM

You'll need to be more specific. E-commerce covers a lot of ground. It sounds like you'd really benefit from just reading previous forum threads here and joining in conversations and asking questions. No question is ever a stupid one and you might find it saves you time in deciding what elements of e-commerce seem most appropriate for your circumstances. Check in frequently and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you get helpful responses

Hi Everyone
Thanks for replying. The idea is for a web business giving information/advice and facilitating groups. however I have never embarked on anything like this before. While i have searched on UKB for information i am a complete beginner and therefore i need at least some basic knowledge to enable me to understand what is being said. Sorry im not obtuse; I just lack even basic basic knowledge.

Hi,

I am very new here and the other members will have a wealth of experience, however, as a soon to be newly self-employed person, I am finding 'The Small Business Start-Up Workbook' by Cheryl D Rickman very useful.

I mean, there is enough info to put you off the idea completely...but if you're determined, you'll want to get to the last chapter. Plus you will spend hours on this forum!

Good luck
:)

Why to waste time on reading books, there are plenty of information available at your finger tips.My suggestion is to look for a business/ecommerce forums and a tutorials with videos which help you a lot then books

Business forums are very useful if you know what you are asking for. As we've all seen, if it comes over as a general and vague question then the answers are equally as vague.

My advice would be to pop into your local Business Link, they'll have loads of information about the practical side of starting and running a business, doing accounts, the legalities of it all and usually some free training courses.

Sorry my friend but when you abuse the English language so badly and then disparage books as a source of reliable information, I'm reminded of the fact that America's greatest moron president couldn't manage anything more substantial than Sports Illustrated.

I'm not being insulting I'm just maybe suggesting you give books another chance :)

Hi Velvet Monkey

We're happy to offer any advice over the phone if you prefer to talk through the different options available to you. We have a number of ecommerce websites in our portfolio if you'd like to take a look at what can be achieved.

Search for TCRM in Google.

Thanks

A really useful book to take a look at is 'The Beermat Entrepreneur' by Mike Southon.

It's a very light hearted book, really useful. It isn't expensive and it's fairly short.

It gives a good foundation of business management in a down to earth way, really recommend to anyone looking to start up or already running a small enterprise.

If you are simply looking to build an on-line business then concentrate on the business side of your on-line shop sourcing/ building your product database & getting images together etc etc and pay a web design company to look after the building of your on-line shop.

On-line shops are so low cost these days and there are so many options & pitfalls if you are starting to design your own on-line shop from scratch. DIY on-line shop building is simply not worth while, unless you want to learn as a hobby.

I'm a great lover of books so they are always my first choice if I'm trying to learn something new (as someone above says, Forums are fine if you want to ask a specific question). My suggestions are:

Starting your own Online Business, Kim Benjamin - buy via startups.co.uk. First book I read and absolutely great for when you are starting out.

Start for Own Business 2010, Ian Whiteling - Really good book on running a business generally - also from startups.co.uk

The Complete Idiots Guide to Starting and Online Business -bit American in style but still some good hints and tips

Search Engine Optimization - An Hour a Day, Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin. The best SEO book I have read - and I've read loads! Really clear and written in a lighthearted style - brilliant

Hope these are helpful.
