Duplicate websites at different URLs

Hello all,

I have purchased a potentially good keyword URL name. I have a website already up-and-running. I am trying to find out what are the pros and cons of having this already established site also on the new URL as well...

Your thoughts are much appreciated...

There can be perfectly valid and legal resons for having multiple domain names pointing to the same content so I wouldn't worry about it so long as you do the correct redirects, etc.

If you can afford it then you could just experiment with it yourself. Do a 301 redirect as sanjiv suggests, and measure the effect on ranking on that keyword. Build some links with the new domain. In any case, you won't be doing much harm by doing it.

Hire a writer to rewrite your existing content based on the keywords of your new domain. Stick the content on said domain. Get ranked. Sit back. Watch the money come rolling in.

Hope this post isnt deemed 'trivial' and an attemp to up my post count and later removed by mods...

301 redirect authority degrades over time, so be aware of that and get yourself some quality, semantically related backlinks if you know how to.

There is nothing wrong with having several domains pointing to your main (money) site, just make sure that they are hosted on seperate ip's.

With regards to people talking about "duplicate content", you won't be penalised for having it by search engines but you won't get benefited from having it on your site. Remember, quality content is good for search engines AND human visitors.

Good luck
