I'm interested to know whether many people here have heard of Ducttape Marketing.

Also, as business owners, would you ever consider hiring someone to help you build a marketing system for your business? What would something like that be worth to you?

I look forward to your responses!

Yes they have been about for ages and John Jantsh has written a number of books. Yes a marketing system would be of use but I would not consider taking on anyone who has a site undevelopement as it indicates to me that the marketing guy does not practice what he preaches!

No 1 of 8 effective marketing strategies. Get your website sorted out!

On a more positive note... the answer is a definite 'yes', and it would (or should I say could) be worth a great deal to me. My problem - and I'm probably not alone in this - is that I've been fleeced before, promised much when little was actually delivered at the end of the day. Other than the bill, that is.

I would like to see more consultants work on a profit-sharing basis, potentially earning more for themselves, and perhaps even for longer, as a result - but only if they actually succeed, of course.

There's a good demand for marketing services, I've been in the biz for about ten years. It's mainly because:

1. Things like SEO and traffic generation is a field that's evolved massively. Getting good qulified traffic in a cost efficient way is quite challenging and most small business owners don't have the time to learn.

2. The whole world is moving online - studies show that people are spending more time on their mobile devices, computers etc . We have to advertise where the people are...that's why things like PPC have become so expensive.

What you mean like there's like lots of people online, so lets advertise online.

Great!!!

no need to duck, however the above is a business model I often consider but my success and income will then totally depend on my clients ability to convert the extra prospects I make them.
Unless the business owner will agree to pay me for the extra prospects sent their way irrespective of whether they get converted or not (unless of course that is also my responsibilty which it shouldnt and indeed wouldnt be), theres no way Id put my income in the hands of businesses that are already struggling with gaining clients. Say I got them an extra 100 strongly targetted prospects a month yet they only converted 2 of them and never followed up with the other 98 despite my advice to the contrary, is that me or them failing?

So my question back to you/ others would be would you be prepared to pay out on prospects (targetted of course) supplied /delivered to you in a proper method and then accept it is down to your business to convert them and I get paid whether you do or not?

Many have been fleeced with marketing, as with web design and SEO etc, so I offer an initial hour long blueprint discussion where we go over many many strategies and whats possible with internet/ mobile/ traditional etc for £250 with of course a view to being taken on longer term, but with a guarantee that if you dont find value in the hour you get the £250 back, no quibbles.

I have no doubt that if you meet me and listen to me you will do a lot better than you are doing now and I back that up

This is absolutely the best way to go, for all concerned. In most cases the results should be measurable, expected / aimed-for targets agreed (in your example, prospects / genuine leads), and profit-sharing / payment made accordingly. Other particulars may vary dependent on the precise circumstances or the product / service being offered, etc. but in most cases this system should prove superior for both parties - especially because everyone involved has a direct stake in the end result, and no one still benefits from a failure. Provided that the risk-reward ratio is fair and balanced, it's in the best interests of all concerned to do the best job they can for the maximum possible gain. That incentive is too often sadly lacking, with predictable results.

Going back to your original point...I love Ducttape.

He recently ran a really interactive competition on his blog to celebrate small biz week in the States. You had to guess which blog entry belonged to whom, thought it was engaging.

Hi Funky Bear,

That's very generous of you, but at the moment I'm not in the position to offer marketing services to you. I'm sure there's someone on here that might be in a position to help though....:)

I'm currently testing the market to find out if many have heard of Duct Tape Marketing in the UK. It's very popular in the US, but my question is, is it a brand that's well known here - outside the sphere of marketing people like me? Well known among business owners.

Out of interest, how many do people on here employ others? Are we all mainly freelancers/one-man-bands/micro businesses (take your pick of small biz category!)?

I've wondered this myself. My impression is that the forum seems to cover quite a broad spectrum overall but leans quite heavily towards smaller operations. Nature of the beast, I suppose.
