Hello, I'm in the early stages of setting up a dog treat business. I've contacted my local trading standards and I'm wanting them to come inspect my home kitchen.

What can I expect from an inspection? And what will enable me to pass the inspection?

I have a pet dog, he sleeps in the living room and an open plan kitchen/ dining room. The door for the back yard is through the kitchen. I have smooth tiled floor, wooden worktops, one double door fridge freezer, an electric oven and hob, one sink and a dishwasher.

I plan to have a seperate area in my fridge for my fresh produce and a seperste cupboard for my dry ingredients and equipment.

Will it help if I get a stainless steel worktop protector since my worktops are wood? And I know owning a dog will be an issue but has anyone else been through the same thing and how did you overcome it?

I looked into doing this some while ago. From what I remember you will need a totally separate commercial kitchen for producing animal feed / foodstuffs. You cannot 'cook' human food in or in or near the vicinity of animal products made for their consumption.

But I stand to be corrected....

Hi, Wishing you all the best with the inspection.

It would be great to hear how you get on with your local trading standards, I've also been considering starting a dog treat business but the legislation surrounding it is vast and confusing at times.

All the best.
