Everyone says that you should have reg and hosting in two different places, in case something goes wrong with one of them.

In my simplistic view of the world, does this not just mean that you have twice the chance of problems? comments appreciated.

no it does not,

If your host is performing awfully you move host and point your domain at the new servers,

If you have a domain and a hosting package they trap you and you have to put up with it,

Its simple to sort out hosting, you get 4 numbers called dns, you login to your domain registrar and point them at your host

easy peezy ;)

Domains and hosting are separate. Any host who won't change nameservers on a domain or let you transfer it out are breaking rules laid down by whichever registry they use, and as such you should steer clear of them.

I understand it's often hard to pick a good host but as with anything just do research - there's plenty on UKBF for example

Don't worry about it, just host your site and domain name with the same company. If anything goes wrong, Nominet can force the old host to release the domain (although this will cost you a small sum - about a tenner I think)

You can purchase the domain and hosting from one provider or you can keep it with two different providers. If you do a bit research and choose the right hosting provider, then there is absolutely no harm in keeping the domain and hosting with one provider.

my view is this, if your domain is registered with a company that is registered with nominet (in the uk) then your fine, if the company goes bust nominet will handle your domain, you may loose your settings but these are fairly easy to set up again.

in terms of hosting this is far more important, my advice is find a designer or developer you trust and in general they should give you free hosting, or if your designing your own site or already have one ask them for hosting anyway because you can guarantee if they have big enough or large numbers of clients they will have their own servers which is a much better option that buying single hosting anywhere. also if the company is reputable they will have half decent search rankings and you may get a nice link ;)

I always register our domain names with one company and host with another, it is the best solution. If you are getting a designer to create your site, they will always have their preferred hosting provider. If maybe best to sort the hosting and site maintenance out via them. Then you will have someone to contact if you have any problems.

This is a subject that gets my goat quite a bit and as Dominic quite rightly pointed out, if you can't trust them with your site then why use them?

You are protected by the registrar no matter who you use to register the domain. It makes absolutely no difference and gives you no higher level of protection separating the domain and hosting.

I'm not about to replicate my blog on here but this post I made in September last year about this very subject:
